Bell Work Pick up sheet on table
Answer this question, and give it some good thought: In your opinion, what is the greatest need of the human race? In a couple of minutes, we will turn, pair, and share with a classmate sitting next to you
2
Today’s Agenda Introduce new material Take notes Closing activity
3
Standard 9 Describe how Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs can affect the physical, social, psychological, and behavioral status of a person. Use technology to produce a visual or digital chart or table to explain the information obtained from a published or digital text (TN CCSS Reading 1; TN CCSS Writing 9)
4
Today’s Objective By the end of class today, you will understand the basic principles of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs by drawing his “needs pyramid” and observing how these needs are translated in the entertainment industry
5
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs
NEEDS: a lack of something required. *Needs motivate us to act!
6
Some questions to ponder…
What is your greatest need? This can be anything… Do you care what people think about you? Does worrying or being anxious about something affect you physically or psychologically?
7
Maslow stated: “The lower needs must be met before an individual can strive to meet the higher needs.”
8
Maslow’s Needs On the next slide, you will see a triangle. Copy down the triangle and the words or phrases within each box into your notes.
9
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
10
Maslow’s Needs Do you agree with this triangle? Why or why not?
Remember: Maslow felt that the lower needs MUST be accomplished before the higher needs and self- fulfillment could be met Wwill be watching this movie to demonstrate Maslow’s Hierarchy: “Cast Away”
11
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Did you know that you have probably already been exposed to Maslow’s “Triangle of Needs”? Let’s watch a few clips from the popular Pixar film “Up” Pay close attention and try follow along m/watch?v=Iucf76E-R2s
12
Closing Thoughts With a partner, discuss these questions:
Which level (hierarchy of need) do you feel was most often addressed in “Up”? Name at least one other movie or TV show that you have seen that addresses Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs How does a person in the healthcare field assist with meeting these needs?
13
Bell Work Please pick up 1 article and 1 questionnaire from the back roller Begin reading the article, but DO NOT begin answering the questions
14
Today’s Agenda Read the article
Answer the questions – these will be a grade! Discussion Turn in the questions.
15
Today’s Objective By the end of class today, you will better understand Maslow’s Hierarchy by reading, comprehending, and discussing a textual article with evidence.
16
The Article Take your time Comprehend what you are reading
As you read After you read Take your time Comprehend what you are reading Take notes of the author’s key points Ask for help if you don’t understand something Answer the questions in order Ponder how this applies to your life I may stop you in the middle of your questions once everyone is done reading Submit your answers for a grade
17
Bell Work Take out a half sheet of paper and answer these questions, but DO NOT put your name on it: Did the article make sense, yes or no? Do you feel that Maslow’s Theory makes sense? Why or why not? Finally: which of the 5 stages of Maslow’s Hierarchy are YOU currently in???
18
Bell Work Make your own “Needs Triangle” without looking at Maslow’s example. Label the triangle with your name. For example, mine would read “Mrs. Bettag’s Hierarchy of Needs” Establish specific things that YOU think people need to survive, starting with the most important from the bottom Your triangle probably won’t look like Maslow’s…
19
Today’s Objective By the end of class, you will be able to describe each of Maslow’s 5 levels of Hierarchy
20
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Today, we are going to dive into describing each of the 5 needs in more detail These needs are often portrayed in every day television and commercials As we go through each of these needs we will see how they are subliminally portrayed on TV

PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS These are necessary to life Without these= death
Food Water Oxygen Sleep Housing .com/watch?v=i- KKCztPBRg Sensory needs-hearing, seeing, feeling, tasting, and mental stimulation Motor needs-if muscles are not stimulated, they will atrophy
22
SAFETY/SECURITY The need to be free from anxiety and fear
In this class, you know what your assignment are and you have plenty of time to work on them The need to feel secure in the environment This classroom is safe from judgment The need for order and routine We have structured schedules at school
23
LOVE AND AFFECTION Social acceptance Friendship Need to be loved
In a “group” Friendship Best friend? Need to be loved Parents, family Sexuality A person’s feelings/attitude toward their masculine/feminine nature “Manly men”; “Girly girls” watch?v=a7Dcoer2oxA Sexuality The ability to give and receive love and affection Reproductive capabilities atch?v=6RvyFFjP7RE
24

26
Bell Work After discussing the 5 levels yesterday, now which level do you think you might be at? How many of these needs do you think a healthcare provider might be able to meet? Write these down
27
Today’s Objectives By the end of class today, you will learn how humans attempt to reach the highest level of Maslow’s (self-actualization)
28
To meet our human needs Trial-and-error
Direct methods v. Indirect methods Stress reactions Challenges and responsibilities 0xqeU
29
DIRECT METHODS Hard work Setting realistic goals
Cooperating with others Evaluating effectively OAE
30
Direct Methods – Setting Goals
With a partner sitting near you, discuss 3 goals that you each want to accomplish within the next 10 years
31
INDIRECT METHODS Suppression Denial Rationalization Compensation
*Note: These are unhealthy when used too often, but sometimes allows us to cope!
32
When defense mechanisms are inadequate, stress reactions develop:
Chronic complaining Demanding and manipulative behavior Sleeplessness Depression-be alert for potential suicide Withdrawal woS3bks
33
To meet the needs of others…
Personalized healthcare
34
Challenges Meet the patient’s needs to the best of your ability
Set standards of excellence for yourself Let your conscience be your guide Anything less than 100% is not acceptable
35
Wrapping It Up You will have a quiz over Maslow’s Hierarchy tomorrow!
Be sure to know Maslow’s triangle specifically and IN ORDER
36
Bell Work You have 3 minutes to review for your quiz!
37
Bell Work Those of you who did not take the quiz yesterday, prepare to do so now
38
“Cast Away” Today, we will begin watching the movie “Cast Away” starring Tom Hanks This movie will show the progression of the main character as he at first regresses and then progresses through Maslow’s Hierarchy
39
While you watch the movie…
This is not a time to “zone out”, even if you seen it before! DO NOT have your cell phone out or sleep (we will turn off the movie if this happens) DO have paper and something to write with Take notes over: Major events Specific times when the main character reaches different levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy Stress reactions or coping mechanisms
40
Don’t Forget… You will have to write a synopsis about the movie and how it relates to our classwork Let’s watch the movie!
41
Cast Away Movie Synopsis
Write this down! 1 Page long (only include your name at the top – nothing else!) 12 point font, 1” margins, double-spaced Must be printed out BEFORE class starts **Don’t forget – this synopsis is not just you telling me what happened in the movie. You should write about specific things in the movie and how they apply to some or all of Maslow’s triangle!
