The outcomes of mini med school lecture series on health literacy

2 Let’s Talk Science Let’s Talk Science is an award- winning, national, charitable organization focused on education and outreach to support youth development. We create and deliver unique learning programs and services that engage children, youth and educators in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

3 Mini Med School Mini Med Schools are a widely used method of community outreach Medical students, residents, or professionals lead sessions related to various medical topics in an effort to increase public health and medical knowledge

4 LTS Mini Med School Schedule
Jan 14: (Un)Healthy hearts Jan 21: An apple a day keeps the doctor away Jan 28: A beautiful mind Feb 4: The war on drugs Feb 11: How to pass the test Feb 18: The health care odyssey All lectures will take place in MSB 150 from10:00-12:00 Presentations will be approximately an hour long with lots of time for questions and discussion These talk are intended to increase your knowledge and thus certain concepts may initially appear complex

5 Presenters We are two second year medical student in the UBC Medical Undergraduate program We study here on the island as part of the Island Medical Program

6 Why we are doing this project
Meeting independent scholarly activity requirements for our Medical Undergraduate Program We are interested in determining the impact of LTS Mini Med School This study will fill a gap in the current research on the topic and also provide further justification for the continuation of Let’s Talk Science Mini Med School and medical talks open to the public in the future

7 Mini Med School Research
Research question: Will a six part series on basic medical topics lead to an increase in health literacy? We are going to measure health literacy using the validated HLQ before the first lecture and six weeks after the lecture Population: UVic Elder Academy Intervention: Six lectures on medical topics Comparison: Pre-intervention/Post-intervention Outcome: Health Literacy

8 How you can be involved Be involved by attending a minimum of 4 of the LTS MMS lectures and filling out one survey today and one survey at the beginning of April (20-30 minutes each) The survey is completely anonymous Actions required 1. You must attend a minimum of four LTS MMS lectures 2. Read and sign an informed consent form 3. Fill out the survey before this lecture 4. Fill out a survey 6 weeks after the last lecture on February 18th, 2017
