1 Newton’s Third Law of Motion

2

3 What is Newton’s Third Law of Motion?
If one object exerts a force on another object, the second object exerts a force of equal strength in the opposite direction of the first

4 What is Newton’s Third Law of Motion?
For every action force, there is an equal and opposite reaction force -- This can cause balanced, or unbalanced forces (no motion or motion)

5 All forces work in pairs
Action force- a push Reaction force- an opposite push Action and reaction forces work in pairs

6 For every action force, there is an equal and opposite reaction force
A force never acts by itself! NEWTON’S CRADLE

7 A balloon shows an action and reaction pair

8 Rockets use action and reaction pairs
the rocket's action is to push down on the ground with the force of its powerful engines the reaction is that the ground pushes the rocket upwards with an equal force

9 Explain this picture in terms of Newton's Third Law?

10

11 How about some examples Example #1
Action force: sitting on your chair Reaction force: your chair pushes back up Example #2 Action force: feet pushing down on the floor Reaction force: floor pushes up

12 Notes #3 What other examples of action and reaction forces are in the room?
