Interest Inventory For Students in Grade 5 and up For K-4 Students
On first use of the system, the student completes an interest inventory using a 5-point scale. The interest inventory helps kids find the books that they want to read at their reading level. Interests can be changed by the student through account information. Interests are used in the title recommendation engine. The interest inventory includes read-aloud audio if the student can’t read the headings of each interest. The title recommendation engine uses the results when selecting books for students. This information can be reviewed by educators through the class roster for each student. Understanding student interests can be helpful in planning additional instruction in a variety of content areas. For Students in Grade 5 and up For K-4 Students

Click to Read a Book The title list is in a familiar format for students, and is easy to navigate through. In our example, the student is really interested in animals, so they’d like to see more about one of the books shown. They’ll click to read “Do Dogs Make Dessert?” Click to read (c) Capstone Digital

Book Information Screen
myON reader Demo Script Book Information Screen By clicking on the book, the student can now see more information about the book before committing to reading it. A description of the title is available under review. If they like, they can also click to see reviews that others have written about this book. If you click the review tab, you’ll see the average star rating. The info tab will provide additional information such as run time, the ATOS level, as well as the Lexile level. Our student clicks “Read this book”. (c) Capstone Digital

Reading a Book Now that a book has opened, our student will be able to read it. The system will measure how long it takes to read each page, and will also offer reading scaffolds for struggling readers. For example, the student can turn on audio, and have natural recorded audio read-aloud each page. For further help, the student can turn on word-by-word or sentence highlighting – or both! And, an online dictionary is embedded to further help with glossary words. The book reader includes audio controls To build your word searching skills you have access to a dictionary that will pronounce each word and provide a definition. The book reader has a content tool to control navigation to back matter pages(can include- table of contents, glossary, writing prompts, etc.) (c) Capstone Digital

Rate and Review the Book
myON reader Demo Script Rate and Review the Book After reading a book, the student can also rate the book and write a short review. Ratings help the system make better recommendations for future reading. And the review is a way for students to learn about social networking in a safe environment. Teachers can turn off the review functionality if they don’t want students sharing reviews. The workflow for reviews is simple – once written, they are marked for review by the teacher prior to approval. Approved reviews are available for other students to review. Unapproved reviews do not get distributed in the system. (c) Capstone Digital

Take a Content Quiz The Main Idea Supporting Details Vocabulary
myON PD 5/5/2018 Take a Content Quiz Tests comprehension on the following parts: The Main Idea Supporting Details Vocabulary Inference Interpretation Once a student has completed the book, they can be prompted to take a quiz on the content they just read. This quiz can be turned on or off by the educator. This 5 question quiz is easy to take, and the five questions are selected from an item bank of 12 questions that focus on Main Idea, Supporting Details, Vocabulary, Inference, and Interpretation, making sure that each time the quiz is taken, the questions are randomly selected for the book. These quizzes don’t measure the student reading ability – instead they provide a quick check about the book that was just read. (c) capstone digital 2011

Benchmark “Check-Up” To help myON determine how well the student is reading, benchmarks are presented to the student. These represent an opportunity to check in with the student and measure any changes in the student Lexile measure. The benchmark is presented as a “Cloze Passage” – this means that words within the text are blanked out (or “clozed”). The student clicks on the blank to see four possible words to complete the sentence. These words include the correct word as well as three foils (also known as “distractors”), which are not correct. The benchmark test isn’t related in terms of content to the book that was just read – instead it is a check-up to re-establish the student’s reading level. It can indicate Lexile growth or change over time. The benchmark is completed in one sitting by the student, and is easy to take. After reading 5 books in myON reader, the benchmark “check-up” will automatically be presented to the student. This is a quick, fun activity that will measure reading ability changes. Student Home Page Each student will have the same structure of a home page, but the featured titles will be different on the recommended view. Regardless of what titles are featured, the student will see 4 different views to the books. - All books: They can also perform a guided keyword search, use a visual search interface, use an advanced search, or select titles from the book wall. - Teachers could use the Teacher’s List to assign summer reading lists where the books are easily accessible to students. My List would be used by students to mark their favorite books, create a personal library, or highlight books they want to read in the future. (c) Capstone Digital
