1 Quinn River Baptist Fellowship
Thank you for your interest in our web distributed notes from our weekly bible studies. Some content had to be removed from these slides for copyright purposes, and thus the slides by themselves can be difficult to follow without the original animation sequences, and accompanying notes from the actual study, but we pray that you will still find them useful. You may send any questions to myself at and I will try and get answers back to you in a timely manner. You may re-use these slides in your own bible studies, both personal and public, and arrangements can be made for accompanying notes and original slide presentations once copyright issues have been resolved. May God bless your effort, and may you grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Pastor Jerry Eyers

3 ADDICTIONS What does the Bible say about Addictions?
Sow a thought, reap an act. Sow an act, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap a destiny. ADDICTIONS What does the Bible say about Addictions? How can we avoid being snared by (blind-sided) an Addiction? When you think you won’t be, that’s when you are most vulnerable to be snared! EVERYONE can be snared. What is an addiction? Alcohol, Smoking, OTC Medications, Prescriptions, Sexual, Drugs, etc. Habitual Sinning – Speeding, Lying, Gossiping, etc. Sin for you – not for someone else?? - Over Eating, Watching TV, etc.

4 Addiction Statistics for JUST Drugs and Alcohol
One of every eight Americans has a significant problem with alcohol or drugs Approximately 27 million Americans either use illicit drugs regularly or are "heavy drinkers." Of these almost 16 million are estimated to be seriously (or health effecting) in need immediate treatment By age eighteen, almost 12 percent of all young people are illicit drug users An untreated alcoholic's medical costs are approximately 300 percent higher than non-alcoholic's medical costs Approximately 70 percent of illegal drug users are employed and contribute significantly to workplace absenteeism, accidents and injuries, decreased productivity, increased insurance expenses, employee turnover costs and on-the-job violence The estimated annual direct cost to our society resulting from substance abuse is more than 250 billion dollars Source: SAMHSA (U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration)

5 Twelve Steps These are the original Twelve Steps as published by Alcoholics Anonymous: We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

6 The 5 Steps of the Addiction Cycle 2
People who have never been subjected to an addiction can not understand why the admonition to “just don’t do it” or “Just say no” is totally useless. Saying that to someone caught in an addiction does nothing but drive them deeper into this cycle. 1 3 5 4

7 We are going to take a biblical approach to dealing with addictions by examining what the bible uses as examples of addictions, where they come from, why we have them, how to combat them, and how to remain victorious against them. We are then going to approach the recovery aspect of an addiction using ‘8 signposts’ along the ‘road to recovery’. Sign 1: We need to accept Christ as our Savior, and believe on Him Sign 2: We admit we need help Sign 3: We find that the cause of our addiction is not our enemy Sign 4: We learn to accept responsibility for our own choices Sign 5: We see our need for mercy Sign 6: We discover that we have so much to be thankful for Sign 7: We discover that surrender is a way of life, not a one time act Sign 8: We devote ourselves to helping others

8 2 1 3 5 4 Anyone can fall into this cycle with anything
I didn’t think I would ever become addicted to anything, until one day I woke up and realized I was. I then found I couldn’t get out of the cycle on my own. 1 3 5 4
