Introduction and Purpose
The purpose of this evening is to: Welcome you to the Reception class To gain an insight into the curriculum To hear about our routines and planning To look at our classroom and the learning environment

The Early Years Foundation Stage
There are seven areas of learning and development that we cover. These are divided into prime and specific areas: Prime Areas: Personal, Social and Emotional Development Communication and Language and Literacy Physical Development Specific Areas: Literacy Mathematical Development Understanding the World Expressive Arts and Design

Letters and Sounds & Jolly Phonics
Letters and Sounds is a phonics programme published by the Department for Education and Skills in It aims to build children's speaking and listening skills as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills.

Jolly Phonics: Jolly Phonics is a complete foundation for reading and writing. It teaches the letter sounds in an enjoyable, multisensory way, and enables children to use them to read and write words.

Letter formation The children practise letter formation in a variety of ways: Handwriting books Mini whiteboards In the air On the carpet Using their bodies Using a magic pencil

Story, rhyme, drama, songs to engage children's imagination and interests. Examples of maths activities
Recognising and writing numbers to 30 Counting forwards and backwards Counting to 100 by rote Counting objects Addition and subtraction using various methods e.g. objects, fingers, number lines Number sequences e.g. Counting in 2’s, 10’s Number bonds and doubling of numbers Recognising coins and using money in practical role-play situations Learning the concept of time Ordering events and sequencing days and months Measuring: height, weight, length 2 Dimensional and 3 Dimensional shapes

Planning, Observations and Profiles
One topic each half term The planning we carry out stems from the children’s interests and individual needs Observations EAL support A profile is created for each child. It documents their learning journey. Photos, observations and notes are included to keep track of development and learning. We welcome your participation in the profiles (special moments)

Our classroom An ideal EYFS classroom has a number of areas set up for the children to use independently. The children are aware that there is always an adult nearby to support them. In our classroom we have the following areas: Reading Role-play Creative Literacy Maths Construction Free choice toys Displays Parents’ Notice Board Birthday and Reward Board Children’s work

Reminders and information
Please ensure your child arrives at school between and 9.00 am. Please ensure all uniform is labelled, including PE and ballet kits. If your child’s folder is sent home, please send it back after the weekend. Parent consultations are held in the Autumn and Spring terms. Reports are given out at the end of the Summer Term.

How to Help at Home Sing and tell nursery rhymes
Talk about numbers, colours, words and letters you see Ask your child to cut out and stick pictures from magazines Cook / bake together Plant bulbs or seeds in a pot or garden patch Use the weather – shadows, rain, puddles, snow, wind to extend your child’s vocabulary Explore the park at different times of the year Read a book together Talk to your child at every opportunity On a trip to the supermarket, talk about the different packaging shapes
