WINDOWS 10 1st Anniversary
2
SO HOW DID THE FIRST YEAR GO?
Various installation and set-up hiccups – seemingly hardware dependent Upgrades during the year changed, in some cases, some settings – again likely hardware dependent. Some functions were modified Cortana – Digital Assistant – rolled out. Not set up automatically for voice control. Works erratically – microphone quality? More later. Rolling back to Windows 7/8.1 works BUT can lose some things
3
SO HOW DID THE FIRST YEAR GO?
Basically stable for the last three months – sufficient that we felt able to say go ahead IF you wanted to Sufficiently similar to Windows 7 to keep the learning curve short – especially if you take the time to set it up in the way that suits you We do see some variations – minor but confusing – on installation. For example, the search box does not have Cortana Icon and it can not be added. Clicking the box brings up the Cortana Icon for voice search – off to the left side.
4
SO HOW DID THE FIRST YEAR GO?
Some External Hard Drives and Printers may have problems. Check with the manufacturer’s web site for new drivers. Talk to Home Help about work arounds Microsoft Security Essentials no longer exists separately. It has been added into the existing Windows Defender App under that name. If you were using it [Windows 7 users] with a scheduled scan you will need to recreate the schedule. See the last slides for how to do this
5
CUSTOMIZING TO SUIT YOUR NEEDS
Some installs boot to the “Metro” style Start Screen rather than the Desktop. This seems to occur when upgrading from Windows 8.1 IF you used 8.1 that way. Has also been seen on machines with Touch Screens The original way to change this has – apparently - disappeared. This was RIGHT click on the Taskbar>click Properties>Click Navigation tab>Check Start screen entry. The new way is not obvious! When you boot – which of the following do you see?
8
DESKTOP MODE The first example is Desktop Mode. It is intended to simulate – to a large degree – Windows 7 We assume most of you will find it more comfortable to work this way – especially if you take the time to customize Confusing terminology: Start Menu is the Metro style replacement of the Start Menu from Windows 7 Start Full Screen is the Start Screen from Windows 8/8.1
9
TABLET MODE The second example is either “Tablet” mode” or “Start Full Screen” mode – depending on which web article you read Note that if you use this, on initial set up, you may not see any “Apps” on the Task Bar. This could happen in Desktop Mode also although we have not seen it To see them – RIGHT click on the Task Bar then click “show app icons”
10
CHANGING MODE Every web search – including Microsoft - seems to suggest one of two ways to handle this Use the original method – which no longer exists! Go to Settings>Personalization>Start and switch on “Use Start Full Screen” - this does NOT boot to the Desktop; it only shows “Start Full Screen when Start button clicked Probably means you are in in Tablet Mode
11
CHANGING MODE
12
CUSTOMIZING DESKTOP MODE
Desktop Mode is designed to work like Windows 7 ALMOST!
13
CUSTOMIZING DESKTOP MODE [Cont.]
The Start Button in Windows 7 shows several features – the main being the Start Menu & the Power Menu – with a single click Windows 10 shows the [Metro style] Start Menu with a LEFT click & the Power Menu with a RIGHT click.
14
CUSTOMIZING DESKTOP MODE [Cont.]
LEFT CLICK RIGHT CLICK
15
CUSTOMIZING DESKTOP MODE [Cont.]
The first step is to decide from where you want to launch the “Apps” you use. You have four options: The Taskbar The Start Menu The Desktop The “All Apps” Menu
16
CUSTOMIZING DESKTOP MODE [Cont.]
This is, of course, a matter of personal choice If you upgraded an existing computer to Windows 10 the Taskbar and the Desktop will have retained whatever was there previously Likewise Start Menu items should also be there BUT so will a lot of other things If you are setting up a new computer then you have to personalize from the beginning
17
A POSSIBLE APPROACH BEFORE WE BEGIN -THINK RIGHT CLICK!
Use the Taskbar for Apps that you use “Every Day” Use the Desktop for Apps that you use “Often” Use the Start Menu for Apps that you use “Infrequently” We will look at customizing each one BEFORE WE BEGIN -THINK RIGHT CLICK!
18
WHAT’S ON THE TASKBAR ALREADY?
Windows 10 has a some extras – the Cortana Search Box [which may appear differently on different machines], the “Task View” button. and “Store” Possibly will have the “Mail” icon – a new App It will have the icon for “Edge” – the new Browser instead of Internet Explorer It will have the same icon as before for Windows Explorer but this has been renamed – more realistically – as File Explorer The Taskbar can have two “lines” if extra space is required Should have most icons you added to the “old” Taskbar
19
THE WINDOWS 10 TASKBAR
20
CLEAN UP THE TASKBAR FIRST
Do you want to use Edge? Windows Explorer is still available although it will only receive security upgrades from now on. Issues seen originally have been fixed but some features are still not intuitive! Do you want to use the new Mail App? If you are using Windows Live Mail with an Outlook/Hotmail address you may need to. This may apply to Bell Mail [which is Outlook] also. May need to talk to Home Help if problems [no longer working] with Windows Live Mail
21
CLEAN UP THE TASKBAR FIRST
Do you want the Cortana Search Box on the Taskbar? It’s also available from the Start Button with a RIGHT click Do you want Task View? This feature permits the creation and use of multiple “Virtual Desktops” We still see no real use for this for personal use
22
CORTANA AND TASK VIEW RIGHT click on the Cortana Search Box
23
CORTANA AND TASK VIEW Uncheck Task View if not required
Hover the Mouse on Cortana to see the options Reminder - Some Installs do not have the Cortana Option here
24
CORTANA – LATER INSTALLS
25
CORTANA – ACTIVATION Cortana Voice feature is NOT automatically activated Click on the Cortana Icon to start the activation process Follow the instructions Several people have found it necessary to do this multiple times! – likely microphone issues
26
NOT WANTED ON THE TASKBAR?
Remove any other unwanted items from the Taskbar by RIGHT clicking the Icon Click “Unpin from Taskbar”. Remember “Pin” and “Unpin” – we shall see them again!
27
ADD WHAT YOU DO WANT Click the Start button & then “All Apps”:
Scroll through until you find what you want to add & RIGHT click it:
28
“ALL APPS” Click on any program in “All Apps” to launch it.
The Icon for the App will appear on the Taskbar & disappear when the App is closed To place any App on the Desktop – drag & drop it We shall use “All Apps” when we come to the Start Menu
29
ADDING INTERNET EXPLORER
Type Internet Explorer in the Search Box When it appears as “Best Match – RIGHT click it Pin to either start or Taskbar as desired
30
CLEAN UP THE DESKTOP RIGHT click an icon then click “Delete”
This only deletes the shortcut – the App is still installed and available
31
TIME TO TACKLE THE START MENU
32
ABOUT THE START MENU Use “Tiles” instead of Icons and Text as in Windows 7 Tiles can be added or deleted Tiles can be re-sized – how much depends on the Tile Tiles can be re-arranged by dragging to the desired order Some Tiles are “live”. They show information that changes and is updated. This does use bandwidth which could be a concern if you have a bandwidth cap
33
CLEANING UP THE START MENU
The first thing to do is to get rid of any Tiles that you do not want RIGHT click on a tile to see the options available for that specific Tile
34
LIVE TILES RIGHT click on a live tile – you will likely see changes happening to identify it It is a good idea to turn the live Tile off first as it is unclear if it still uses bandwidth when unpinned Click “Unpin from Start”
35
STATIC TILES RIGHT click the Tile Click “Unpin from Start”
Unpinned Tiles can always be put back if you so decide
36
ADDING THE TILES YOU WANT
In the “All Apps” menu RIGHT click the App you want on Start Click “Pin to Start” Repeat for all Apps that you want on Start
37
CUSTOMIZE YOUR START MENU
The Tiles you have selected for the Start Menu can now be customized You can choose the size – this does vary by Tile You can “Drag & Drop” Tiles into the order that suits you
38
RESIZING TILES RIGHT click on the Tile Click “Resize”
Click the option you want Repeat for all Tiles Drag & Drop Tiles into your desired order
39
QUICK TIP! We all tend to unplug external devices – Flash Drives, External Hard Drives etc. – without thinking Windows 10 appears especially sensitive to this – giving error messages when the device is next used – messages that are “false” Best to unplug the proper way
40
THE RIGHT WAY OK if you see this – if not you will see instructions
Click as shown below: OK if you see this – if not you will see instructions
41
SETTINGS & MANAGEMENT Windows 10 has two approaches
Control Panel – as in previous versions – RIGHT click on the Start Button to access as well as various shortcuts for management Action Centre – in the Notifications area of the Taskbar These overlap to a large extent but not 100%
42
SETTINGS & MANAGEMENT
43
SETTINGS & MANAGEMENT Action Centre Icon The Action Centre
44
THE ACTION CENTRE Provides quick access to certain features
Provides an alternative route for settings Blue Tiles are currently activated – Grey are not CAUTION: defaults to track your LOCATION. While this helps in some things it also invades your privacy
45
SETTINGS IN ACTION CENTRE
The concept is to group together settings that are frequently needed at the same time and – in principle – to make certain things more understandable Clicking the Settings Tile shows this – note the Search box which can be a big help!
46
WHEN YOU CLICK A “GROUP”
Clicking a group shows you – on the left - a list of items that can be accessed and – on the right – the specifics of the item you have clicked
47
TYPICAL SETTINGS CHANGE
48
SOMETHING NEW!
49
A FURTHER EXAMPLE
50
USING ACTION CENTRE As with the Control Panel, Action Centre needs to be used with care! There are settings that can cause problems Be aware that where things overlap between the two they do not always do so 100% as in the next slide
52
ACTION CENTRE If you are happy with Control Panel/Power Menu you could ignore the Action Centre It is worth exploring – especially the PRIVACY settings which are NOT in Control Panel BE CAREFUL ALWAYS!
53
WINDOWS DEFENDER You can access Windows Defender directly and run a scan manually BUT you can not schedule a scan here as you could in Microsoft Security Essentials Type Windows Defender in the Search Box – click to display it
54
SCHEDULING WINDOWS DEFENDER
Scheduled scans are set up in “Task Scheduler” Type Task Scheduler in the search box – click on it when it shows under “Best Match” – you will see this:
56
TASK SCHEDULER In succession, DOUBLE click Task Scheduler Library>Microsoft>Windows [ignore where its says Windows Defender after you have clicked Microsoft] Scroll down to Windows defender and click it – you will see this
58
TASK SCHEDULER Click on each item in the box shown by the red arrow until you see “Windows Defender Scheduled Scan” in the box shown by the blue arrow Double click it You will see this when you click the “Triggers” tab:
60
TASK SCHEDULER Click “New” – you will see this:
Choose your scan frequency, dates, times etc. – then click OK Close Task Scheduler
