Between 1949 and 1961, about 2.5 million East Germans fled to West Germany. To help stop this, East Germany decided to build a wall around West Berlin and West Germany. The wall stretched 28 miles across Berlin and 75 miles around West Berlin. The Berlin Wall quickly became one of the most notorious symbols of the Cold War.
