Material Testing Trends: Component obsolescence has made it increasingly difficult to receive support for certain EM frames. Replacement part availability can no longer be guaranteed for key lab equipment. Some frames, due to age, are no longer receiving product development and support for their application software. Test Information: What type of tests are to be performed? tension, compression, bend, fatigue, etc. What information are you trying to obtain from these tests? What are the expected loads? If so, what is the expected full scale strain? Will the tests be performed at ambient conditions or is an environmental chamber required?

Specimen Information: What are the specific materials to be tested? aluminum, stainless steel, silicon carbide, etc. If it is a composite material: What type of composite is it? (fiber, whisker or particulate reinforcement) What is the matrix material? What is the reinforcement material? What is the specimen geometry? round, flat, tabbed, buttonhead, etc. What are the specimen dimensions? total length, width, thickness, gage length, gage diameter, etc. Can the customer provide a sketch? Is a sample available?

Special Conditions Information: Elevated Temperature Chamber/Furnace: What are the minimum and maximum test temperatures? If negative temperatures, what type of cooling is preferred? LN2, etc. What tests need to be performed at elevated temperature? Is strain measurement required at elevated temperature? Controlled Atmosphere Furnace: What are the minimum and maximum test temperatures What is the required vacuum level? Rough vacuum = 10-2 torr High vacuum = 10-5 torr Is an inert environment required? Argon, helium? Which of the above tests need to be performed in a controlled atmosphere? Is strain measurement required in the controlled atmosphere? Are there any other special conditions?

Lab Operations - Maintenance How are you able to maintain your test system? Software current? Calibrations up to date? Controller / electronics current? Lab Operations - Productivity How is your laboratory measured for efficiency? How do you ensure your lab remains competitive? What are your uptime goals? What would you like to improve?
