Servants Love Differently

“And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, "Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And proclaim as you go, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'” Matthew 10:1-7 ESV

“Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons
“Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay. Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics or sandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food. And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you depart. As you enter the house, greet it. And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town. Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.” Matthew 10:8-15 ESV

Disciples v.s. Apostles Verses 1-4; Disciples become apostles
Jesus hands them the steering wheel We are the modern day disciples ...keep on reading!

Matthew 10:5-7 “These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, "Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And proclaim as you go, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'” Matthew 10:5-7 ESV Jesus commands this in order to fulfill his covenant with Israel. Later, after his resurrection he switches the command. They must learn to first serve the people within their sphere of influence.

...oops? Verses 5-7 Just got back from Cambodia
Why?? To fulfill his covenant with Israel Put self in disciples’ shoes. I'd rather go to the Gentiles, not to Israel who thinks they have it all figured out! I'd rather go to Cambodia & preach the gospel to people who know they need something, rather than preach it in the US to people who think they have everything. But God calls us to first love and serve our family member and our church members. Calls us to serve long-term What does that look like?

Matthew 10:8 “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.” Matthew 10:8 ESV

A lifestyle of servanthood: give without pay!
Read verse 8 again, and think about what that meant for the disciples… LOVE PEOPLE DIFFERENTLY Think about what that means for the disciples Disciples are top of the rung people in society, living the good life. Jesus calls them to a different life. Love people differently! However… not easy! These do not come naturally Story Introduced to servant leadership Not appealing! Applied for trip.

Matthew 10:9-10 “Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics or sandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food.” Matthew 10:9-10 ESV

Acquire no gold = Reliance upon Jesus
Hand the steering wheel back over Jesus is asking for the wheel back! If we can give him the wheel, it allows us to set our selfish thoughts aside. Story Stressful time - focusing on self a lot Jesus slowly began teaching me to rely on him w/ finances Crash car, yet He provides Come back, I want to have a lifestyle of servanthood!!

Matthew 10:11-15 “And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you depart. As you enter the house, greet it. And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town. Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.” Matthew 10:11-15 ESV

Let your peace return to you
Don't become a river run dry. Have a servant’s heart but don't let the people you serve run you dry. Some friends will keep taking and taking. If they are not ready for the harvest, keep waiting and praying.
