5 Current Projects – Construction Cycle 7: Asphalt
Primary Objectives Perpetual Pavement Tests. Develop “perpetual pavement” design criteria for airport pavements. Overload Tests. Determine allowable aircraft overload criteria for flexible pavement. Secondary Objectives Study the structural performance of drainable bases. Investigate changes in subgrade CBR with moisture movement in low strength subgrade.

6 CC7 Test Item Layout

7 CC7 Perpetual Pavement Test Fiber-Optic Strain Plate Responses
Fiber-Optic Strain Plates White Light Polarization Interferometry Software interprets and transforms the received signal into physical quantitative values. Measurement of near-surface compressive & tensile strains, and tensile strains at the bottom of the AC, over an 18-inch width. HMA strain measurements made during traffic tests (now in progress) will be used to validate the new HMA fatigue failure model in FAARFIELD. CC7 HWD Tests

8 Fiber Optic Strain Plate
Polyphenylene Sulphide (PPS) Plate

9 Fiber Optic Strain Plate (FOSP)

10 Study slippage failures on Runway 4R-22L at EWR.

12 Base layer strain gages are embedded in the milled surface
Overlay gages are placed on top of the milled surface All wires are connected in lighting cans

13 Progression of Delamination:
