It is in the constellation Coma Berenices.
It was discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1781.
It is one of the brightest galaxies in the Virgo cluster.

4. M100 Five supernovae have been identified in M100: SN 1901B, SN 1914A,
SN 1959E, SN 1979C
and SN 2006X.
The most recent supernova was seen by West Monmouth School and photographed at the time using the Faulkes Telescope North in Hawaii via the internet.
