Russian constructivist Photography
(1916 – 1924)

Russian Constructivism was an influential art movement that originated in Russia around This art movement was all about rejecting the idea of autonomous or independent art, and was all about creating a new relationship between the artist and society.

Russian Constructivist Photography
This movement was powerful, and within just a few short years, major impacts could be seen in architecture, graphic design, industrial design, theater, film, dance, fashion and especially photography.

Innovative photographs incorporated high or low vantage points, oblique angles, and dramatic diagonal compositions in efforts to revolutionize and challenge their fellow countryman’s visual thinking.

Alexander Rodchenko Boris Ignatovich Georgi Zelma El Lissitzky These are four of the most prominent Russian Constructivist photographers (many of them were designers of other sorts as well).

These photographers managed to capture through their lenses a changing way of life in the post-revolutionary era.

Constructivist art is focused on abstraction combined with a devotion to modernity. Many experimental and geometric elements are often use, and work is rarely emotional. Objective forms that contain a universal meaning were far more suitable to the movement than subjective or unconventional forms.

Constructivist themes are quite minimal, where the artwork is broken down to its most simple and basic elements. There was also an order that was sought after in the creation of new work. This order was desirable because this movement arose at the time right after World War I, and the art of order expressed a need for understanding, unity and peace.

Russian Constructivism was in decline by the mid 1920s, partly a victim of the Bolshevik regime's increasing hostility to progressive art. However it would continue to be an inspiration for artists in the West, and therefore leaving a legacy that endured into the 1950s.
