The time when you can choose what you want to do. This is the time in the day a person has when they are free from every day duties

Task List all the things you do or participate in when you are free from your every day duties e.g. school, homework, chores Active or passive leisure? Can you put you list into these two categories?

Reasons for an increase in leisure time?
Shorter working week- by law so more free time Higher unemployment-so more available time Technological devises - Labour saving devices in the home e.g. washing machine- gives people more available time. The internet allows people to work and shop from home saving travelling time. Increase in part time and shift work- certain parts of the day more free time

What is the impact of an increase in leisure time?
Leisure industry has grown to cope with the increase in demand Local authorities – have a legal responsibility to provide leisure services i.e. libraries, swimming pools, playing fields, bowling and sports centres. Private enterprises also offer a number of sports related facilities. These need to be run at a profit and are usually found in urban areas (towns/cities) rather than rural areas (villages). Where you live can affect your choice of leisure activities.

Exam tip It is important to be able to identify what is meant by recreation, but questions are likely to focus on how best to use the time available to bring about maximum health benefits.

What is Recreation? It can mean just relaxing and enjoying yourself, but it is increasingly being used to mean something that is active and healthy. Physical recreation – where you participate for intrinsic rewards rather than extrinsic rewards. So you would be aware of the health benefits and for pleasure.

Key terms Intrinsic rewards – somemthing that gives a person an internal satisfaction from doing something well. (pride, happiness) Extrinsic rewards – something that is done for a particular reward that is visible to others ie. Money, trophies, certificates.

Why people choose different forms of Recreation?
Age – elderly like bowling, young like skateboarding. Location – living on the coast – surfing, living near mountains- skiing. Provision and cost – some activities are expensive ie. Golf, while others don’t cost anything ie. Walking.

Gaining maximum health benefits.
Lifelong sports – It is better to choose something that you can involve yourself in throughout your life so that you are more likely to be active and healthy over the course of your lifetime. Some sports cater for all age categories ie. Swimming, cricket, golf.
