1
What is motivation? What types of motivation are there?
2
Extrinsic Motivation Extrinsic motivation comes from an outside source- includes both tangible and intangible More temporary Praise and encouragement Applause from crowd Medals and trophies Certificates Swimming grades as you progress Money Good way of attracting newcomers to an activity, young performers like to receive rewards. However they should not be used all time as they will enjoy the trophy more than the game itself Overuse of extrinsic motivation to devalue and limit intrinsic motivation
3
Intrinsic Motivation Intrinsic motivation comes from within the performer More permanent Feelings of pride Reaching the top of a mountain Self satisfaction Winning a major competition Enjoyment Scoring a goal More desirable as it is a more permanent way of maintaining interest Coach should gradually decrease extrinsic rewards and replace them with intrinsic. Setting personal goals and giving ownership of these goals can increase intrinsic motivation
4
Methods of motivation Sessions should be FUN
Adjusting training environment Ensure players can play against those of similar ability Role Models Coaches can use player of a good ability (not star players) so it seems achievable. Success should be attributed to internal factors Coaching explaining they won due to effort and ability Reward specific behaviour Emphasise that better performance is the direct result of an improvement. Consider performer’s personality Some enjoy limelight whereas other will prefer praise away from other people Praise should be given as soon as possible Being awarded man of the match after a game will motivate and reinforce behaviour. Set SMARTER goals
