1 Olubunmi Abel Clinical Neuroscience A Mobile-Friendly ALS Online genetics Database
Research Topic Development of tools for automated collection, integration and analysis of genetic data in ALS

2 INTRODUCTION What is ALS ?
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a motor neuron disease affecting the upper and lower motor neurons of patients and killing them 2-5 years after diagnosis.

3 BACKGROUND ALS Online genetics Database, (ALSoD) is located on It is a freely available website with no registration required Holds mutation, geographical and phenotype data on 104 genes Links to bioinformatics resources, publications and tools for analysis Viewed by over 34,000 unique visitors since January 2009 from about 140 different countries

4 BACKGROUND Statistics by Danyl Bosomworth MOBILE MARKETING ANALYTICS

5 BACKGROUND Problem: Aims:
The problem is that statistics on mobile usage around the world predicts that in 3 years mobile “should” take over desktop internet usage. Most researchers and patients will expect to have a pleasurable experience on their mobile device when accessing data on ALSoD. Aims: To enable access from a smartphone or tablet, we developed a mobile friendly version of the website and an app (available in Android market or Google play).

6 METHOD Four Factors considered when choosing to develop a mobile website or an app Target Audience – researchers, patients Budget Available - £0 Purpose Intended – easy access across multiple devices Features Required – Smartphones and tablets, internet connection

7 Most frequently viewed pages
METHOD Most frequently viewed pages Google Analytics tool and in-house built analytic page

8 Optimization of WebPages
METHOD Optimization of WebPages Configured content layout Retained images but reduced sizes Summarized available information Modified pages stored in Mobile Folder

9 METHOD Mobile detection
Triggers HttpRequest.IsMobileDevice and HttpRequest.UserAgent property on .NET framework If (property = true) then (device = mobile)

10 METHOD Testing and Feedback
Sent web address link to users through text messages Encouraged users to click the ‘Recommend’ button on facebook Positive feedback from all - 2 Android users, 1 Nokia user, 5 Blackberry users, 2 iphone users and 3 ipad users

11 METHOD App Development
Installed Eclipse IDE (Integrated Development Environment) Downloaded the Android SDK (software development kit) Installed the ADT (Android Development Tools) plugin for Eclipse Downloaded the latest SDK tools and platforms using the SDK Manager Downloaded Emulators/Simulators to test and debug Used Webview object to view pages on Android

12 Firefox, Google chrome etc
RESULT Accessing from mobile device Accessing from computer HTTP request : UserAgent string e.g. internet explorer, Firefox, Google chrome etc HTTP request : UserAgent string e.g. blackberry, ipad, iphone, andriod etc Database server Full version Mobile version

13 CONCLUSION Single web address redirects users. Feedback from users challenged us into app development App is available in android and submitted to the Android Market or Google play.
