Change of expectations for year groups
Raised expectations in every year group from Reception – Year 6 Using different methods in earlier years We started teaching this new curriculum, bridging the gap between new and old, in 2013
2
New Big Maths – linked to New Curriculum
Linked to the New Curriculum Lots more levels so bridges the gap between levels Let’s try! Learn It’s – Year 4 Steps 11,12,13 – 30 secs CLIC: Counting, Learn It, It’s nothing new, Calculation Year 3 Autumn Term = CLIC 10 Year 6 Spring Term = CLIC 20
3
Multiplication methods – Grid Method
The use of place value to partition the number Using times tables knowledge Using place value to multiples of 10 and 100 … tenths, hundredths
4
Multiplication methods – Expanded Column Method
Links to grid method – just sets out same calculations in a different way Reinforces place value columns when adding up
5
Multiplication methods – Compact Column Method
Shorter method when children have a secure conceptual understanding Can speed up calculations
6
Arrays Arrays is a simple way of dividing an amount of objects. Arrays are split in to equal columns (up and down) and rows (across). When you have completed an array, you can count how many rows and columns there are, and that gives you your calculation.
7
Let’s have a go at this… 24 ÷ 8 = You have 24 counters in total and they need to be shared in to 8 columns. 3 rows So, 24 ÷ 8 = 3, which means 24 ÷ 3 = 8 and 8 x 3 = 24 as well as 3 x 8 = 24
8
Now, try this one on your boards with your blocks…
16 ÷ 4 = __
9
Chunking The easy way to divide!
10
72 ÷ 4 = 18 18 4 72 we know 10 x 32 we know 8 x We highlight the times table we are using. We circle the number of groups.
11
84 ÷ 6 = 14 14 6 84 we know 10 x 24 we know 4 x We highlight the times table we are using. We circle the number of groups.
12
Try this one on your whiteboard…
96 ÷ 6 = 16 16 6 96 we know 10 x 36 we know 6 x
