5
Guy Fawkes Guy Fawkes was born in 1570 in Yorkshire, England
He was a Catholic He went to Spain and called himself Guido He became a soldier (and officer) in the Spanish army
6
The conspirators
7
Where's this?
8
They put barrels of gunpowder in a boat.
They rowed the boat across the river. They put the barrels in a cellar under Parliament
9
Caught! (¡pillado!) But somebody told the guards. They were caught.
They were tortured. They were executed. Horribly.
10
Burning the guy Now every 5 November, people make models of Guy Fawkes to put on top of bonfires At first they made models of the Pope (el Papa) because he is head of the Catholic Church
11
Bonfire Night and Halloween
The idea for bonfire night came from Halloween in Scotland. On Halloween (All Saint's Eve), Scots made bonfires and burnt models of witches.
12
Penny for the guy Until around the year 2000, in the week before Bonfire Night, children used to ask for money to buy fireworks - “penny for the guy” They made the “guy” with old clothes, stuffed with straw or rags They took the “guy” into the street in an old “pram” (cochecitos)
14
Penny for the guy Children also used supermarket trolleys
15
Bonfires Some bonfires would be in the street.
Some bonfires would be in the gardens of people's homes. Now bonfires are usually in parks.
17
Fireworks
18
Fireworks in the 1950s and 1960s This is a typical “assortment” box of fireworks from the 1950s. Every family would buy a box of fireworks like this.
19
Plus sparklers
20
Jumping Jacks would scare your grandma (abuela)
21
But fireworks are dangerous
Now the English don't usually celebrate Bonfire Night in their own street or back garden. Instead, bonfires are now organised in parks by specialists. Children no longer ask for “a penny for the guy” but instead, the week before, celebrate Halloween with “trick or treat”
22
This year's biggest “guy”
15 metres tall Who is he? Face like Shrek Wayne Rooney Manchester United
