1 Clauses and Phrases Sentence Structure

2 What is a Clause? A subject and predicate working together.
The subject of a sentence is the person or thing doing the action or being described. The predicate tells us what the subject does or is. It will include a verb.

3 Examples I am. Reading is fun. I study hard so I get good grades. Mike went to the park and Shelly cleaned.

4 What is a phrase? A group of words related to the subject or predicate. Hiding under the table, the dog knew he was bad. Mickey Mouse, the world’s best cartoon character, enraged the student.

5 Conjunctions Join words, clauses, and phrases. Examples
Rob and I went to the movies. She is good at singing and great at dancing. We ordered pizza but we couldn’t pay for it.

6 Conjunctions After If When Although Nor Whenever And As Or So Where
Wherever Because Since While Before Though Yet But For Unless Until

7 Dependent Clauses Cannot stand by themselves.
Do not express a complete thought. Conjunction + Subject + Predicate Examples Unless you want to go. Because I care. And you lose your cool.

8 Independent Clause Can stand by itself or with a dependent.

10 Counting Clauses A new clause starts when a new subject is introduced.
Watch for conjunctions, but finding subjects and predicates is more reliable. Example ` Since Doug studied, he did well on the test and was happy.

11 Practice pg.160 After each sentence write P (phrase), IC (independent clause), or DC (dependent clause) to identify the bolded group of words. The excerpt from To Kill a Mocking Bird is in our textbook. ______ Jerry was neat when he was young. ______ If he cut paper figures, he would measure them first. _______ Then he would cut carefully with scissors. ______ In junior high he won penmanship awards. ______

12 Practice Write each sentence. Underline the subjects.
Circle the predicates. Draw a line between the clauses. Write how many clauses are there.

13 Practice pg. 160 I like cookies and cakes but ice-cream is my favorite. Tom, my neighbor’s brother, helped me catch the newspaper boy and scold him. When Janet and I went to the park, it started raining so we went home. Reading is fun but doing math problems is boring so I hate math. Craig, my old friend, did not pick up the phone when I called because he was busy.
