Some claim to be one thing, but actually are something different. The United Nations recognizes 193 countries in the world today. Democracy Direct Indirect
All eligible citizens directly have a say in governmental decisions Only works when a small number of people are involved Example: Athenian Greece Indirect Republic: The people elect Representatives to make decisions on our behalf (Rome) Presidential/Legislative (enforce laws/make laws) Example: U.S. - Obama Democracy A government ruled by its citizens - Majority rules

Parliament Elected legislature (law makers) + a cabinet (Prime Minister) chosen by Political party - Citizens vote for the party not the leader Example: Great Britain – David Cameron Parliamentary Democracy The people vote for the political party they feel best represents their views of how the government should operate

Monarchy Ceremonial: Constitutional: Absolute:
Figure heads Leader has NO power Example (29): Britain – Queen Elizabeth Constitutional: Monarch is restricted by a constitution Leader has SOME power Example (9): Morocco Absolute: Monarch has ALL power Example (6): Saudi Arabia Monarchy A government ruled by a hereditary King/Queen/Emperor for life

Communism In Theory In Reality - Working class takes over elite
Ruled by dictator Elimination of private ownership of property or capital while claiming to make progress toward a higher social order in which all goods are equally shared by the people (i.e., a classless society). Everyone is equal equally poor - Working class takes over elite - No leader - Equal distribution of wealth & power - Classless political system * Most have become dictatorships Examples: China, Cuba, N. Korea, Vietnam, Laos, & Cambodia Communism Political and economic theory derived from the ideas of Karl Mark whereby all property is publicly owned

Dictatorship Types of Dictatorships:
Military (gets power from the armed forces) Absolute Monarchy (hereditary) Civilian (Don’t have the same resources as monarchies or military dictators, so they create their own institutions) One Party (One political party) Examples: Bashar al-Assad: Syria Saddam Hussein : Iraq Communist Example: Kim Jong-un: N. Korea Dictatorship Leader has complete control over citizens by use of brutality

Control all aspects of social life as well the economy, education, art, science, private lives of citizens. Total Control (one step farther crossing the line) Examples: Adolf Hitler: Nazi Germany Joseph Stalin: Soviet Union Saddam Hussein : Iraq Maybe North Korea & Syria Totalitarianism Dictator regulates every aspect of life inside a nation
