What you need to know about the Fecal Occult Blood Test
2
Taking the Fecal Occult Blood Test
Requires 3 small stool samples. Samples are collected with the end of an applicator. Stool samples have to be taken one day apart, since colon cancers do not bleed consistently and may bleed from time to time. Test can be performed at home. Detects color changes on a test card.

Frequency of the Fecal Occult Blood Test
Recommended yearly for people starting at age 50

Results of the Fecal Occult Blood Test
A positive FOBT means that blood was found in your stool. Your doctor will determine the source of the bleeding by doing a colonoscopy or an examination. A negative test result shows that no blood was found in the stool sample. Regular screening for colorectal cancer is recommended.
