Program Review Presentation April 20, 2009

Program Description We provide training for students in the ever expanding field of interior design. Topics include space planning, building and life- safety codes and the American Disabilities Act, reading construction documents, architectural and furniture history and much more. We have recently created specialized certificates in emerging areas of design such as Universal Design and Green/Sustainable Design. Brief Description of your program. Who are you? Program -- Strengths We have a good core program but the curriculum seems to have grown to a point that may be connected to our declining enrollment. We have been engaged in ongoing meetings to discuss ways to refine the curriculum and possibly combine related courses so that we can decrease the overall size of the degree program. We have higher retention and repeat rates which means that although our overall numbers have declined, we have more students taking more than one course. I believe this would indicate that we have a smaller but more committed group of students. Our faculty is involved in the industry and ongoing training to maintain currency. Our merger with Fashion has resulted in a more objective decision making process and the ability to be more flexible about funding resources.

Program -- Challenges Refine curriculum.
Possible combinations of existing courses Problem with course “ownership” Larger pool of adjuncts? Student numbers are our greatest challenge, if our assumptions concerning our connection to the economy are correct then we should be seeing steadily increasing numbers as the economy improves.

Scheduling Our courses are taught in one day blocks but that is not based on objective data No change to resource allocation except availability of room?

Marketing Increase marketing? More print materials requires funding
Missing demographic hard to target- ad campaign or mailer would require funding More on campus marketing Meeting with counselors to promote program Continued involvement in ArtTech and HS fairs, meeting with HS counselors

Advisory Committee In 4 years only a small number have participated (mainly vendors) Increase participation of working professionals

Continuing Education Good level of participation by faculty: Requires continued funding

Alternative Funding Hospitality is a great example of alternative funding but is product oriented (food). Involving students in design projects involves liability issues.

Classroom Safety Those issues are resolved in the new facility
Resource allocation: primarily involves furnishing the new room

Retreats Very productive: requires funding
