People who want to become a fashion designer… go to the Kwantlen Polytechnic University By Jennifer UL

2 Information About Kwantlen Polytechnic University
In this university, it takes 4 years to complete this full time program. They are divided into 8 semesters and each semester you will learn about fashion designing. There lots of courses but it is basically about the basics first, then drafting/sewing, designing, designing through technology etc. Fashion designing courses are a program that is modular.

3 What Will You Receive? Bachelor of Design
Diploma in Fashion and Technology But you will be fine with just a Bachelor of Design. The Bachelor of Design can be really useful when you want to run your own business. But even if you don’t, you still need one.

4 $$Cost?$$ From the beginning until the end of the 4 years, it costs a total of $17,500. Textbooks~ $2,600 Instruments(computers and softwares)~ $1,650 Expendable supplies(something that is used once)~ $4,200 Fashion industry events~ $800

5 What Letter Grade are Needed?
Your grade 11&12 grades for sewing/clothing/textiles should be a B or higher or you can show your garments to demonstrate your skills. These clothing needs perfect stiches, must be pressed, and must be a hang able clothes. Grade 11&12 English grades must be B or higher.

6 Portfolio Portfolio is very important. It must include;
Art&design skills, sewing skills, computer skills, awareness of fashion profession, and basic math skills. Art and designing skills should be shown by 1-2 sketchbooks that were drawn within last year and 2 pieces of artwork/design. Computer skills are proven by self-generated computer work(Text photo layout etc.) Math skills are tested with a simple math test. Volunteer experience is needed and so as your computer skills just like I mentioned before.

7 Sewing Skills Sewing skills are the most important part. To prove your sewing skills, you must have; 6(min.)to 10 (max.) garments sewn properly. It must be at least 4 different type of garments. (For example 1 pants, 3 shirts, 2 jackets etc.) in different fabric type. These are used to see you sewing skills and what you can make. It should include set-in sleeves, cuffs, collar, buttons and button holes and 2 different type of zippers and pockets

8 If You Complete this Program What are the Benefits?
This program prepares you to become a fashion designer and be good at all the skills a fashion designer needs. To become a fashion designer, you need a bachelor’s degree if you want to run your own business but even if you are not going to, it is good to have a bachelor’s degree.

9 My Thoughts… I think I am good canadite. I enjoy drawing and sketching and enjoy designing too. But my problem is that I am decent with computer skills and colour coding. But overall I am really good with sewing. I even got a really good complement saying that I had perfect stitches and that I should join textiles next year in grade 9.
