2 A little about F. Scott Fitzgerald
American author of novels and short stories. Regarded as one of the most famous authors of the twentieth century. Married "golden girl" Zelda Fitzgerald formerly known as Zelda Sayre ( )

3 The Great Gatsby Myrtle Wilson-Tom's mistress her husband is George Wilson, he owns a garage Jay Gatsby, owns extravagant house next to Nick and throws even more extravagant parties. Nick Carraway-narrator Tom and Daisy Buchanan-Daisy is Nick's cousin Jordan Baker-Daisy sets her up with Nick Myrtle Wilson-Tom's mistress. Jay Gatsby-owns and extravagant house next to Nick and throws even more extravagant parties.

4 Plot Gatsby begins to lie right away.
Later it is clear that Gatsby and Daisy had been in love at one point. They agree to meet again, and love is renewed. Tom finds out that Daisy is cheating and he outs Gatsby for his lies at a group function. Summer of 1922 Nick rents a small home. Daisy and Tom live in East Egg Tom introduces Nick to Myrtle. Eventually Nick and Jordan get invited to one of Gatsby's parties.

5 Plot (cont.) A large yellow car runs her over in the street and kills her. Tom and Daisy reconcile after everything that happened. Myrtle's husband goes crazy and kills Gatsby. Daisy and Gatsby leave after Tom and Gatsby's spat. They take Gatsby's yellow Rolls Royce. Back to Myrtle her husband also finds out shes cheating and locks her in a closet.

6 The Funeral Nobody comes to Gatsby's funeral, except Nick and a few others Just shows who is really actually there for him.

7 AP Question Explain a specific death scene that helps to illuminate the meaning of the work as a whole.

8 Scenes of death The death of Gatsby in the second to last chapter of the book. The fact that Daisy leaves everything behind without a goodbye. Another sign of death is the death of peoples feelings.

9 Gatsby is a well respected man...
Gatsby's death wraps up the story People would attend his lavish parties not knowing who their host was. Some stragglers do not know he has died.

10 Illuminating the work The death of peoples feelings as well as the literal death. They never really cared for him they just wanted what he had. The people who know of his death gossip more and make accusations showing that he may have not been as respected as thought.

It is previously mentioned that Gatsby wants his funeral full of family and friends. Gatsby had friendships formed but when things fell apart it showed where people's true feelings lie, hence the death of feelings for Gatsby.

12 The importance of life in death
The American Dream. Yet he is remembered for nothing. There is no life left for Gatsby. As a matter of fact everything seemed to have started with Gatsby and if fell apart because of him. Nick the narrator stresses being alone.
