6 Definition of Human Rights
HUMAN RIGHTS are the rights that all people have by virtue of being human beings. HUMAN RIGHTS are derived from the inherent dignity of the human person and are defined internationally, nationally and locally by various law making bodies.

8 The Preamble to the Charter
WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

9 Human rights belong to all people regardless of their sex, race, color, language, national origin, age, class, religion, or political beliefs They are universal, inalienable, indivisible, and interdependent People have the right to receive equal treatment, to be free from prohibited discrimination and harassment, and to have access to places, services, opportunities

10 Universal Declaration of Human Rights
The UN Charter empowered ECOSOC to establish “commissions in economic and social fields and for the promotion of human rights….” Under the chairmanship of Eleanor Roosevelt, United Nations Human Rights Commission created the Universal Declaration of Human Rights The Declaration was drafted by representatives of all regions of the world and encompassed all legal traditions

11 Five Categories of Human Rights
Civil – the right to be treated as an equal to anyone else in society Political – the right to vote, to freedom of speech and to obtain information Economic – the right to participate in an economy that benefits all; and to desirable work Social – the right to education, health care, food, clothing, shelter and social security Cultural – the right to freedom of religion, and to speak the language, and to practice the culture of one’s choice
