1. To keep peace among nations 2. To increase cooperation between nations 3. To defend human rights 4. To improve the living conditions of people everywhere in the world

Other Structures in the United Nations
Beyond maintaining peace in the world, the U.N. also sponsors a variety of agencies: The World Health Organization (WHO) Battles global health problems The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Responsible for assisting child welfare in countries The International Labour Organization (ILO) Works to improve labour conditions and living standards for workers The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Tries to stabilize the world economy by helping countries that face great debt and collapse of their currency

Canada’s Role in the United Nations
Canada has been a strong supporter of the U.N. since it’s creation Aided refugees from war or natural disasters Worked on development projects Contributes peacekeepers for numerous efforts

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
A document proclaimed by the U.N. General Assembly in 1948 First international statement recognizing that all humans have specific rights and freedoms Based on the belief that “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights” It condemns the “barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind”

Most countries agree with the principles of the proclamation Non governmental organizations (NGO’s) promote the U.N. Declaration in development countries Enforcement of the U.N. Declaration can only be done by: Drawing world attention to abuses Putting pressure on offending nations
