2 Summary Land Deforestation and Land Degradation have devastated the landscape of Sumatra Indonesia. The clearing of forested land to make way for Pulp and Oil mills has dramatically changed the once green island. An estimated 73 percent of all logging in Indonesia is believed to be illegal. The loss of land and poaching of wildlife has put the Sumatran Tiger, Elephant, Rhinoceros and Orangutan at risk, these species are now critically endangered and at risk of becoming completely extinct in the region. Logging and the burning of forests to clear land for cultivation has made Indonesia the world's third largest emitter of greenhouse gases. In this regards, the international community must do more in order to protect the land cover and wildlife in the region before it is too late.
