Welcome to St Mary’s Maths Workshop for Parents
January 2017

LET’S START OFF WITH SOME MATHS!

DICEY ADDITIONS
4
What is a mastery approach?
5
The large majority of pupils progress through the curriculum content at the same pace. Differentiation is achieved by emphasising deep knowledge and through individual support and intervention.
6
The intention of these approaches is to provide all children with full access to the curriculum, enabling them to achieve confidence and competence – ‘mastery’ – in mathematics, rather than many failing to develop the maths skills they need for the future.

Each lesson should provide opportunities for pupils to:
-EXPLORE the methods (Teacher led, online textbook. Anchor task) -READ about the concepts (Pupil Textbook. Guided Practice) -JOURNAL write about what they have learned -PRACTICE what they know. (Pupil workbook)
9
Anchor task (20-30 minutes)
-Introduce the problem for the day. -Pupils work in groups using concrete resources. -Pupils need to find two methods to solve the problem. -Teacher led discussion of methods. -TA could monitor and assess pupil progress or lead a small group. -Work through the 'in focus' anchor task from pupil textbooks (paper/electronic). -Explore how characters solve the problem.
10
Guided Practice (10 mins)
-This is an adult supported / guided session so pupils can be supported / challenged appropriately by adults . -Pupils work in pairs discussing how to solve the problems. -Lots of talking and exploration in this session - use mini WBs (no paper). -Teacher monitors, assessing pupils learning and provide support/challenge.
11
Independent practice (10 mins)
-Pupils work upon work book tasks independently - similar to an assessment. -During independent work the TEACHER focuses upon the struggling learners. -The TA would monitor the progress of the other learners (as they should be working largely independently) and provide light-touch support.
