Exercise 1: Building Envelop Creation and Material Selection in SketchUp
2
Building Up a House Step 1: Setting Step 2: Model Creation
Step 3: Model Rendering Step 4: Model Attributes Setting Step 5: Demonstration and Exercise
3
Step 1: Settings Right click on the tool bar column and select the tool sets as shown in picture 1. Setting the unit system in the model. Picture 1
4
Step 2: Model Creation Two ways for creating 3-D OpenStudio working space in SketchUp: Create a single Space with New Space icon. (Note: You can’t create another space inside one space or divide a space by wall to make two new space.) Create Space from Diagram.
5
Step 3: Model Rendering Rendering by surface type
Rendering by boundary condition Rendering by construction Rendering by space type Rendering by thermal zone Rendering by building story Hiding rest of the model View hidden geometry View model in X ray Surface Searching Information Tools: Show the information of the object

Step 4: Model Attributes Setting

Space, Thermal Zone and Thermostat Setting
After we create spaces in SketchUp, thermal zone and thermostat needs to be assigned to each space. Otherwise, the space will not be taken into account in EnergyPlus simulation. Space Type: Only for notation in SketchUp and OpenStudio, not used in EnergyPlus Construction Set: The set of construction for wall, roof, floor, window and door. Thermal Zone: The name of thermal zone for this Space. One space only has one thermal zone, but one thermal zone can correspond to many space. Thermostat: The thermal zone temperature control.
9
Surface Matching and Projecting Loose Objects
Surface Matching: Assign boundary condition for the internal wall. (For example, thermal zone 1 is the boundary condition of surface 1 in thermal zone 2 and thermal zone 2 is the boundary condition of surface 1 in thermal zone 1) Projecting Loose Objects: Integrate the SketchUp geometry into Openstudio objects.
10
Space, Thermal Zone and Thermostat Setting
Inspector: Give an overview of the objects in the model. (The selections in the drop down list of inspector come for two sources. One is from embedded library, and the other is from user imported file. You can’t input the attributes of the construction directly in SketchUp.
11
Step 5: Demonstration and Exercise
The construction for external wall is ASHRAE ExtWall Mass Climate Zone 3, and The construction for window is ASHRAE ExtWall Mass Climate Zone 4.
12
Exercise 2: File Import and Space Type Creation
13
Input File There are two input file types with suffix of .osm and .idf. The .osm is specific for SketchUp and OpenStudio, and EnergyPlus can’t read .osm file. However, SketchUp and OpenStudio can import and export both of them for exchanging data such as constructions, schedules and loads...
