Biking on Campus
2
About Bicycling Register your Bicycle: We encourage all bike owners to register their bike for FREE with Campus Police. This will help the Police track and return your bike to you should it be stolen or lost. Bicycle Parking: Bicycle racks are installed near the entrance to most campus buildings. Students may also rent an outdoor bicycle locker near residence halls or an indoor parking space at Rountree Commons for $50/year or $30/semester.

About Bicycling Cont. Bicycle Maintenance: You can fill your bicycle tires and make basic repairs to your bike at any time (for free) using the bicycle repair station located on the north side of the Markee Pioneer Student Center. Bicycle Safety: It is required that each bicycle be equipped with a working light and reflector on campus. We strongly encourage all bicyclists to wear a helmet, yield to pedestrians, and use proper hand signals.

Reasons to Bike It’s really, really good for your heart. Biking just 20 miles a week can reduce your risk of coronary heart disease by 50%. Save the planet! If you travel under your own power, you’ll be decreasing the overall reliance on harmful nonrenewable fuel sources. Riding a bike and getting some moderate exercise can boost your immune system, so you can beat off colds and minor infections much easier than if you were a couch potato.

Reasons to Bike Cont. If you use your car for short journeys you could be shortening the engine’s life. Driving your car only a short distance then turning off the engine causes unnecessary wear and tear. Cycling is known for being a low impact activity that is generally kinder to your joints and your body. If you are overweight then every time you plant a foot when running, all that extra weight is amplified through your knees and ankles.

Reasons to Bike Cont. Spend quality time with family and friends. Cycling is something your whole family can do together, from a toddler to a great grandparent. When you cycle, you’ll find yourself trying to find a way to stay off the roads. You’d be amazed how much opportunity there is to just explore your local surroundings, or how much of it there actually is when you’re not in your car.

Rules for Bicyclists A bicyclist must stop at all stop signs and red lights. Bicyclists must use front and rear lights when riding at night or when heavily overcast. Bicycles are welcome anywhere (outdoors) on campus. They may not, however, go faster than 15 mph on walkways and they must yield to pedestrians.
