St. Finian’s Sports News – Summer Term - July
Congratulations! This St. Finian’s team with be representing West Berkshire in the Berkshire School Games on Thursday 6th July, 2017. Kennet Mini Tennis Championship “The tennis was really fun experience because we worked in a team and trusted each other. Twelve schools took part. Mrs Stevens decided who would play singles and who played doubles. Henry and I were chosen to play doubles, while the rest played singles. It was an amazing experience and we all came back proud. Imogen won gold in the girls’ singles.” Sofia S, Year 5 Success at Woodlands Tennis Club Our Orange team competed in Tilehurst at the Woodlands Tennis Club and won nearly every game. “It was fun and there was some challenging matches, but we played our hardest and never gave up, “reported Sienna. “I would prefer to play full court next time,” added Imogen. Anyone for tennis?… Success at the West Berkshire Mini Tennis Tournament “We played tennis at Park House on Wednesday against seven schools. Mrs Stevens gave us a number from 1 to 8 and we had to play the children that had the same number from a different school. We were organised into two leagues and we played three games then went through to the finals against Hermitage. It was very tense but very exciting – we won by one and half points. I am very proud of my medal and I had a lovely time.” Sofia, Year 4

U11 Girls’ Kwik Cricket Tournament “After much practising, our U11 girls’ cricket team played together against six other schools and came second overall, qualifying for the County Games. We all played our hardest and had fun. I love cricket.” U11’s Boy’s Kwik Cricket Tournament “The Falklands cricket tournament was a tough competition. We played four games and then qualified to the semi-finals. At the semi-finals we played against Speenhamland Primary School, who was great at fielding, but could not match our bowling. In the finals, we played against Birch Copse School, who arrived with their professional cricket coach. We fielded first but could not stop sixes and fours but we tried our best, then it was our time to bat. We tried our hardest and it came really really close – we lost by 5 run – to a well drilled and determined team.” Success at Bradfield College Kwik Cricket Tournament Once again, we were lucky enough to be invited to Bradfield College’s prestigious cricket event. Thank you to Bradfield College for inviting us and hosting their fabulous cricket event (and feeding us lunch and ice cream!) It was a fabulous day, with lots of sixes and lots of smiles and laughter. They played all day and won every match, displaying great sportsmanship.

We worked as a team and raced lots of times across the pool doing different strokes to win points for the school. We cheered each other on (loudly) and we had a great time and we came third. YIPEE! INTERHOUSE SPORTS DAY We celebrated our return to school in fashion, with our annual Inter-house Team Sports Day taking place the first day back at school. Children came dressed in their house colours and took part in various team sports in their houses. The House system allows every pupil and member of staff feel a sense of belonging and encourages us to show team spirit and thrive on the ethos of participating as a team. Due to incumbent weather, sadly most of the activities were held indoors but everyone had fun!

Berkshire School’s County Finals at Wokingham Cricket Club – the boys team coming 2nd in the county! Wow! Both our boys and girls team qualified to attend the County Cricket finals and they played their socks off. The girls played three official games then a round of friendlies, while the boys played four games then came top of their league, to qualify for the semi-finals. The semi-finals were against a Wokingham team and it was quite intense game but St. Finian’s won by thirty runs. They were delighted to be in the finals and they played their hardest but came a close second. Year 3 / 4 Girls Futsal Tournament at Northcroft Leisure Centre Our Year 4 girls got a chance to try a new skill with playing futsal for the first time. Futsal is mainly played inside and is similar to football but is played on a smaller pitch, faster paced with players having to pass the ball within five seconds. This tournament was run by Thatcham Torandoes but referreed by ex St. Finian’s who came along at the last minute due to unforseen circumstances. Our team was magnificent and managed by Mrs Corini. Thank you to both our ex students and Mrs Corini. “I really enjoyed it and we did really well, but I can’t remember the score but Felicity scored two goals and I was brilliant as goal keeper.” Megan, Year 4
