The Executive Branch

The Executive Branch… Is the largest government branch.
Executes (carries out) the laws made by Congress. Led by the President. Made up of 15 specific departments.

The President… Leads the executive branch.
Is elected by the American people every 4 years. Must be a natural-born citizen of the U.S. Must be age 35 or older, and have lived in the U.S. for 14 years. Cannot serve more than 2 terms (8 years).

The President’s Job Approve or veto (reject) bills from Congress.
Follow the Constitution and the law (even if he/she disagrees with it). Act as Commander-in-Chief of the military. Nominate Supreme Court Justices. Represent the U.S. to other countries.

Departments 15 Departments help the President.
Each focuses on a specific area. A Secretary leads each Department. These Secretaries make up the President’s Cabinet. The Cabinet advises the President.

The Vice President In charge of the U.S. Senate.
Main assistant and advisor to the President. Must be ready to become President or Acting President at a moment’s notice. 14 Vice Presidents have become President.
