2 UNIT OUTCOMES Be able to locate major long-haul destinations of the world Know the types of holidays offered within long-haul destinations that meet different visitor motivations Understand how factors can affect travel to long-haul destinations Know the features and facilities that contribute to the appeal of long-haul destinations for different types of visitors Be able to plan a long-haul tour.

3 ASSIGNMENT BRIEF The unit contains four tasks and the first task will be handed to you next week as Task 1 brief is currently being verified and will be handed to you next week.

4 LEARNZONE As usual, on learnzone you will find the BTEC specification for this unit (PDF) You will also find all the Assignment Briefs for the unit Hand in dates will be on learnzone and within your brief so please make sure you make a note of these dates and plan your time accordingly. There will also be blank maps available for you.

5 AIMS OF SESSION Understand what we mean by LONG HAUL and the types of aircraft used for long haul travel. Locate continents and long haul destinations across the continents, identifying destination types in preparation for your first assignment.

6 What is a long haul destination?
For this unit a long haul destination is a destination with a flight time of more than 6 hours from the UK. This excludes all European countries, North African countries and Asian countries bordering the Mediterranean

7 LONG HAUL AIRCRAFT Long-haul flights are typically made by a wide- body aircraft, such as the Airbus A330, Airbus A340, Airbus A350, Airbus A380, Boeing 747, Boeing 767, Boeing 777 or Boeing 787.

12 LONG HAUL Therefore, throughout this unit, we are referring to destinations across different continents (except Europe) and across the oceans.

13 GROUP ACTIVITY Use the task sheet handed out and carry locate key destinations, areas and oceans on the map to familiarise yourself with long haul destinations. You must use a key for this activity (and in your actual assignment work)

14 Destination Types When you come to do your maps for the assignment, you will ideally need to identify FIVE destination types for EACH continent. Remember this will be for ASIA AFRICA NORTH AMERICA SOUTH AMERICA AUSTRALASIA

16 PAIRED ACTIVITY Consider the destination types we have discussed and give examples of two of these for each type. Try and think of different continents for each one. You will have 15 minutes for this activity.
