Youth Practice Schedule
Message to Parents: You are welcome to attend and urged to help with 1:1 instruction! Our Ideal Practice Scenario: Coach Darin and 2 HS wrestlers at every practice. AND/OR 4-6 committed parents to support breakouts as-needed. Practice on Tuesday and Thursday Nights PK-2nd grade at 6-7pm 3rd – 6th grade at 7:15-8:30pm Remember, kids range in age from 4 – 11 . If you EVER have concerns, please talk to a board member or coach.
8
Practice Focus – Method to Madness
Fundamentals for Wrestling Success Takedowns (single, double) Breakdowns (chop bus, far arm near lace) Pinning Combinations (half nelson, cradle) Escapes (wrestling from bottom, sit-out, stand-up) Defense (defending a takedown, sprawling, pinning combo) Nov-Feb Focus Teach tried and true techniques Compete via Gameplay, Relays, etc. Drill extensively Live wrestling Post competitions, ID challenge areas and work to improve upon those as a group. Most Important of All: Learn to compete, individually and as a team. Learn to win and lose Here’s what your kid WILL learn by end of season. Best way to learn is to come to practice AND compete. “Mat-time” Likely to teach 2 or 3 throughout season and really try to get them.
9
What Might a Practice Look Like?
6:00 Game/Compete 6:15 Jog/Stretch (Drink break) 6:25 Group talk – Move demo 6:35-6:50: Drills alone, with partner 6:50-7:00: Live wrestling Can use parent help, especially during drills!
10
What Does a Match Look Like?
Three, 1 minute periods Period 1: Both kids start on their feet Period 2: Flip coin for choice (up, down , both up or defer) Period 3: Other child gets choice Scoring 2 points for a takedown (top control) 2 points for “reversal” 1 point for “escape” 2-3 points awarded for exposing back to mat (near-fall) Match ends early with pin (shoulders on mat), technical fall (15 point lead), or time expiration. Ask Questions! It’s much more fun when you know what is going on! You’ll get it!

Many Opportunities to Wrestle
We strongly encourage: 1)Practice 2)Competing at Opens with Coaches present Yet involvement is an individual choice Some kids only practice, others wrestle 50 matches/year We believe, with the right mindset, competing will enhance your experience and love for the sport over time. All open tournaments in MN and surrounding area listed on The Guillotine website:
14
Open Tournaments – How They Work
entry (nominal fee - around $10 per wrestler) Go to weigh-ins (there is no “making weight”) Go to the stands, eat, kids warm up together. Announcer will call kids to “staging area” by grade. Grouped by age, grade, experience and ability (you can document all at registration ie. ability/experience) NOTE: Parents can both staging AND matside wrestling. Kids are then taken in groups of 3-4 to a mat to wrestle Pre-K and K 1st, then 1st grade, 2nd and so on. A coach or experienced parent will always try to be there as well. If your child is K-2, you will be in and out in a couple hours Tournaments usually last 4-6 hours start – finish

What is Wrestling? Wrestling is: But what you really need to know:
The art of living is more like wrestling than dancing – Marcus Aurelius Wrestling is: the oldest sport on earth - cave drawings date back to 3,000 B.C. one of the original sports in the ancient Olympic Games in Greece a builder of determination, diligence and perseverance. But what you really need to know: Wrestling is both an individual AND team sport The schedule is flexible, and the level of commitment and activity is up to you and your child. Most importantly

So Many Benefits PHYSICAL MENTAL/EMOTIONAL Agility and Quickness
Balance (Body Control) Coordination Flexibility Core Strength Endurance Explosiveness Controlled Aggression Value of Practical Nutrition and Exercise Emotional Intelligence/Attitude Self-Confidence Humility Discipline/Accountability (self and team) Work vs Reward Ratio Overcoming Obstacles/Fears Trying is Winning / Failing is NOT Losing Preparation Exclusivity (the “few”) INTANGIBLE Anyone can do it! NO height or body shape reqs, 40 yd dash times, off-season reqs Financial demands are tempered. The discipline and intensity prepares your child for life (in academics, work, family) It channels the aggressive child’s tendencies, and cultivates the more passive child’s. It’s a GREAT cross-trainer for ALL other sports!
21
Want to see a picture of “opportunity”?
The Great Opportunity Benefits/Rewards are tangible outside of the previously mentioned: Medals Trophies T-Shirts Podiums Public praise (raised hand on mat) Diaper Pins Sometimes, though, things don’t go your way. Want to see a picture of “opportunity”?

“I STINK at wrestling!” -If you can't accept losing, you can't win.--Vince Lombardi
23
How might you handle this?
Plan for ups and downs maybe not encountered in academics or other sports yet. Top 4 at every meet earn an award, but it’s clear who “won”. Thoughts/Suggestions: Absorb this. Understand where your child is physically, emotionally, mentally Know: Your encouragement and engagement matter! Your kids hear and see you, especially when mat-side. You’ll get chances to see (and feel) who you don’t want to be. Again, we are all here to help. Not in the business of telling people what to do. If you join this group, you will be with a group of people who have ALL been through wins and losses. -Sports do not build character, they reveal it. – Unknown
24
A Couple Week’s Later Same place as the previous photo. Another teammate beat him. Hey, 2nd place is not a death-sentence. Lost his very first match then came back to win the next two. No tears, just friendly competition. ”Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall.” -Confucius
25
Consider Goal-Setting
Why? A great practice to engage both your child AND yourself. Helps put this sport (all sports) in perspective. Identify and celebrate what’s really important, together. Enjoy the small successes throughout the journey Success is not wins alone! Some Ideas: Make new friends, Be a good listener in practice, Attend every practice and do my best, Learn 1 new move and use it in a match, Fight off a pin, Attend team competitions, Wrestle 15 matches this season, Shoot first this week, Finish the season, etc. Handout available if interested. Train to push yourself both physically and mentally; Compete so as to improve yourself as well as those around you; Live to be healthy in mind, body and soul.
26
Common Wrestling Concerns
Winning/Losing It’s easy to put too much emphasis on this vs continuously learning, improving, striving to be your “best self”, growing. There is almost always someone better, and almost everyone is beatable. Skin Problems Usually avoided by checks prior to each tourney, showering after practice. Mats are washed before or after every practice. Anti-bacterial wipes are evidenced to help. Cutting Weight Not an issue for Open Events – just show up and wrestle kids of similar size/ability. A family decision only for post-season competition and/or team events. Skipping – Quitting A family decision. At some point you may hear, “I want to skip” or “I quit”. Be ready for it. The benefits are only there for those who endure/persevere. “How” you do anything is always more important than “what” you do. - Unknown
