1
Looking Back at Exponents
Objective: Students will recall and apply properties of exponents.
2
Exponents What does an exponent mean? (what does it tell us to do) Repeated multiplication and how many times to multiply What is the base versus the exponent? Base is the number that is being repeatedly multiply
3
Operations with Exponents
Can we add or subtract numbers or terms with exponents Same base and different Can we multiple terms with exponents Can we divide terms with exponents Raising an exponent to another power
4
Addition and Subtraction
Usually looking at variables as the base, because numbers could always be simplified Add the following, what rule could you come up with The base needs to be the same and so does the exponent to be able to add them together All you do is add the coefficients but keep variable and exponent the same
5
Multiplication Do bases need to be the same Yes and no, yes to really simplify, no to just write next to each other Perform the following multiplication What rule or property can you com up with Add the exponents
6
Division Again do bases need to be the same Perform the division
What rule or property can you com up with Subtract denominator exponent from numerator
7
Exponent Only one base in these problems
What rule or property can you com up with Multiply the exponents
8
Summary Addition and Subtraction Combine like terms, same base and exponent just add the coefficient Multiplication Same base and just add exponents Division Same base and subtract denominator exponent from numerator exponent Exponent Only 1 base, multiply exponents
9
Fractions If base is a fraction in parenthesis you need to be able to distribute the exponent to all the variables and numbers inside
10
Combination of Operations
Can you apply multiple rules to simplify an expression
