IPv6 Overview Why Ipv6? Major changes Fix address space limitations
Add improvements Major changes Address space size Address notation Simplified header Use of extension headers
3
IPv6 Address Space 128 bits expressed in eight groups of 4 hexidecimal characters Example address: 2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:0000:1428:57ab
4
Notation Variations If one or more four-digit group(s) is 0000, the zeros may be omitted and replaced with two colons(::). Following this rule, any number of consecutive 0000 groups may be reduced to two colons, as long as there is only one double colon used in an address. Example- 2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:0000:1428:57ab :0db8::1428:57ab
5
Notation Variations It is also acceptable to just replace a string of 4 zeroes with a single zero Example- 2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:0000:1428:57ab 2001:0db8:0:0:0:0:1428:57ab
6
Address Types No broadcast! Loopback - ::1
Multicast – starts with Anycast – one to nearest Link local (fe8 to feb) – similar to AIPA Unique local – similar to , , Global unicast
7
Configuring a Host Stateless address autoconfiguration
IPv6 hosts can be configured to automatically send an ICMPv6 router discovery message when they first connect to a network. This message is called a link-local multicast router solicitation request. If configured suitably, routers respond to such a request with a router advertisement packet that contains the network address and other network-layer configuration parameters. Stateless autoconfiguration is only suitable for hosts: routers must be configured manually or by other means.
8
Configuring a Host Stateful Configuration (DHCP)
If IPv6 autoconfiguration is not suitable, a host can use stateful configuration (DHCPv6) A host can be configured manually. Type in entire address EUI-64 Interface ID Configure prefix only; MAC address plus 16 bits used for host portion.

Tunneling/Dual Stack Tunneling Dual stack
Teredo - Allows peers to establish an IPv6 tunnel through a NAT device 6 over 4 Dual stack
