ADVERTISING new opportunities intermediate module 5

2 Advertising is a form of communication intended to persuade an audience (viewers, readers or listeners) to purchase or take some action upon products, ideas, or services. It includes the name of a product or service and how that product or service could benefit the consumer, to persuade a target market to purchase or to consume that particular brand. These messages are usually paid for by sponsors and viewed via various media. Advertising can also serve to communicate an idea to a large number of people in an attempt to convince them to take a certain action.

3 TV adverts A television advertisement or television commercial, often just commercial, advert, ad, or ad-film (India)–is a span of television programming produced and paid for by an organization that conveys a message.

4 radio adverts Radio stations have been selling radio advertising spots to companies and businesses for many years and it is very uncommon to hear a radio station whose programs are not interspersed with radio advertising.

5 magazine adverts Magazine advertising is the ads you see placed throughout publications. By advertising in magazines, you can reach your target audience, educate them about your products or services, and move them closer to making a purchase.

6 billboard adverts A billboard is a large advertising structure, typically found in high traffic areas such as alongside busy roads. Billboards present large advertisements to passing pedestrians and drivers. Typically showing large, ostensibly witty slogans, and distinctive visuals, billboards are highly visible in the top designated market areas.

7 Think about these questions:
1) What sort of adverts do you like most? 2) What sort of adverts do you think are the most effective? Why? 3) Which products usually have the best or worst adverts? 4) What do you think is the best advert at the moment? Why do you like it?

16 How to make an effective and interesting advert:
Your most important decision is choosing the right media to reach your target market. Before writing anything, remind yourself of your objective. Who are the individuals or businesses that make up your target market? What are you trying to achieve? What are the key benefits you can offer, and how do they set you apart from key competitors? You need to be able to answer your target customer’s primary question: ‘What’s in it for me?’ Your advertisement can have no effect unless it catches the reader’s attention. A good headline is essential . An illustration can add impact . Big, colourful advertisements are more successful. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

17 Make up your own ads. Work in pairs (groups).
