Before someone can be helped they have to acknowledge they have a problem. Pg. 449 Figure 17- Signs of Possible Drug Abuse Behavioral Signs: Major changes I behavior or personality Lying, cheating Attention-getting behavior Denial of any problem

Physical Signs Poor coordination Changes in appearance Slurred speech Social Signs Friends suspected of abusing drugs Withdrawal from normal activities Poor school performance

Exploring Treatment Options: -various program that range in medical attention (hospital based, clinics) to counseling (in-patient care, out-patient care, meetings, counseling, etc.) Detoxification: -entering a program for gradual but complete withdrawal from the abused substance under medical supervision.

Therapeutic Community: -a residential treatment center where former drug abusers live together and learn to adjust to drug-free lives. -provide medical care and counseling -Behavior therapy and Group therapy

Supervised Medication: -replacing the abused drug with a substance that has the same effect, without the high. Example- Methadone for Heroin abusers Smaller and smaller doses to help wean the user off any drug completely (psychologically addictive).

Staying Drug Free: Read pgs Steps for protecting yourself from using drugs 1. Refusing Drugs 2. Seeking help (Stress too much? Healthy options!) 3. Alternatives to Drugs -Engage in Physical activity -Volunteer -Join a Youth Group
