1 Prevent Agenda February 2017

2 What is Prevent? Since the ‘Education and Inspections Act 2006’ schools have a duty to promote community cohesion. Over the last few years, global events have led to a growth of extremist viewpoints, including promotion of violent extremism. In March 2015, new statutory duties mean schools must work to prevent children being drawn into extremism. Protecting young people from extremism is an important duty schools now have.

3 Current problems schools are facing
Terrorism/extremism is a constant in the media. This could lead to: Young people being attracted towards ISIS groups Or Young people being attracted to other far right extremist groups/views

4 How could the following effect the views of young people?

14 How social media is used
Propaganda – four main themes: image of success, status and belonging, personal duty. YouTube – dummy accounts Facebook Twitter – remaining anonymous Ask.Fm – support for Syrian travel Instagram – life in Syria, photosets Tumblr – blogs about Syria Private messaging – peer to peer networks

15 Make sure you are protecting yourself online

16 Recognising extremism
Early indicators of radicalisation or extremism may include: showing sympathy for extremist causes glorifying violence, especially to other faiths or cultures making remarks or comments about being at extremist events or rallies outside school out of character changes in dress, behaviour and peer relationships (but there are also very powerful narratives, programmes and networks that young people can come across online) secretive behaviour online searches or sharing extremist messages or social profiles intolerance of difference, including faith, culture, gender, race or sexuality graffiti, art work or writing that displays extremist themes attempts to impose extremist views or practices on others verbalising anti-Western or anti-British views Promoting violence towards others

17 If you suspect any of your peers you must report it to a teacher straight away.

18 Prayer Father, you have given all peoples one common origin. It is your will that they be gathered together as one family in yourself. Fill the hearts of mankind with the fire of your love and with the desire to ensure justice for all. By sharing the good things you give us, may we secure an equality for all our brothers and sisters throughout the world. May there be an end to division, strife and war. May there be a dawning of a truly human society built on love and peace. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord. Amen.
