“When will we teach them what they are? We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move. You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel? Resonates with why most teachers came into the profession and captures the hope, optimism and asset focused approach that characterise the Academic Resilience Approach which underpins HeadStart

THE MOST… exotic hometown unusual hobby/pastime interesting ambition Good ice breaker with a serious point to it. You could get pupils to do this in forms. Use the framework (next slide) to reflect on what the conversations relate to and how that helps to make connections with building resilience

What sort of things build resilience?
Time to look at the framework. Any surprises? It gives us a language and shared understanding of the simple bits of ordinary magic we can all work every day, as well as the whole school approach to create more emotionally supportive environment. Whoever you are in school, whatever your role, what can YOU do? What can schools do

When schools teach resilience & wellbeing, resilience and wellbeing?
research shows that: Pupils will: have more positive relationships be able to deal with challenges and see a brighter future be less vulnerable to mental illness be more able to manage risk live a longer life! In their learning, they will: be better at not giving up be more confident and more creative achieve more in all lessons Why should ALL schools teach resilience and wellbeing? This sets the scene for the session: HeadStart is encouraging all schools to teach resilience and wellbeing. Go through some of the reasons why according to research but also be sure to mention that Ofsted looks for signs of pupils developing their own wellbeing (personal development, behaviour & welfare)and being active participants in building their own resilience in the classroom as well as outside it
