1
Scientific Notation Objective: Students will be able to convert between scientific notation and regular notation and solve problems involving scientific notation.
2
Scientific Notation A way to write very large and very small numbers Uses exponents on 10 to adjust decimal a is a number between 0 and 10, usually a decimal with one number to the left of the decimal point X helps to determine if number is large or small and how many places to move the decimal point
3
Writing a Number in Scientific Notation
Large Numbers Move decimal point until it only on number is to the left of the decimal point=a Count how many places you moved the decimal point =x (this should be positive indicating a large number) Write in scientific notation Small Numbers 1. Move decimal point until it only on number is to the left of the decimal point=a Count how many places you moved the decimal point =x (this will be a negative number indicating a small number)

Examples
5
Writing a number in Standard form
If positive exponent, large, move decimal point to the right that many places If negative exponent, small, move decimal point to the left that many places

Examples
7
Multiplying and Dividing in Scientific Notation
Multiplication Multiple the a values Add the exponents on the base 10 Simplify so it is in proper scientific notation Division Divide the a values Subtract the exponents
