1 COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS
Using Naviance Family Connection

2 Review – Early Action Refers to a non-binding early admission program
Strong candidates may apply in November and receive an admission, denial, or deferral in December or January Students who apply or are admitted under this program are not committed and may apply to other colleges and universities Applying Early Action will not turn a weak candidate into a strong one, and such an applicant may well receive an early denial rather than an early admission or a deferral Students who are deferred will be reconsidered with the regular applicant pool Generally speaking, the applicants who apply Early Action tend to be more compelling, and thus tend to be more competitive for admission than those who apply Regular Decision

3 Students will use Naviance to manage ALL college applications
your counselor if you need your username or password. If you are applying Early Decision or Early Action, before you begin entering information into Naviance, you will need to create an account on the Common Application website. (Do this first.) Write down your Common App user name and password. You will need to enter this information in Naviance. Whether or not you are applying early, the following directions will instruct you on how to enter your information in Naviance so that your ASE school forms can be sent to the colleges to which you are applying. Entering your information in Naviance does not mean that you have applied to a college. You MUST still complete all Common App applications and supplements on the Common App website and/or complete other college applications on that college’s website (including UC/CSU schools). If required, you must also order your test scores (SAT/ACT) from collegeboard.org/scores or actstudent.org

4 How to use Naviance to request records
(transcript, counselor documents) be sent to colleges. In Family Connection, click on “Colleges” on the top left-hand side of the screen. 2. Click on “Colleges I’m applying to”.

5 If you have not yet waived your right to access your recommendations, the following box will appear:
By waiving your right to access, your teachers and counselors have the freedom to write honest evaluations. Teachers are not required to write letters of recommendation, and often will not if a student does not waive his/her rights. When a student does not waive his/her rights, it is often a red flag to college admissions counselors. Your ASE counselor recommend that you waive your rights. Enter your Common App username and password and click “Submit”.

6 To add colleges to your list, click on “+ add to this list”.

7 Click on “lookup” to find the names of colleges you want to add to your list.

8 Search for the college by name, or browse through the list of colleges.

9 Click on the school that you want to add

10 Choose the type of application (Early Decision, Early Action, Rolling, Regular, etc.) Make sure that you do not choose Early or Rolling if the school does not accept that type of application because your application due dates will be incorrect. Continue adding schools by clicking “lookup”. When you are finished adding colleges click “Add Colleges”. (You can request transcripts on this page, but we suggest you request transcripts on a separate page of Naviance.)

11 Once you enter a college, an icon will appear to indicate how your BHHS materials may be submitted. There are 3 different types of college submission applications. They are: Common App Electronic Mail Only If a school is a part of Common App, it is recommended that you apply via the Common App. If you have received a “Priority” invitation to apply, you may choose “Priority” when you indicate how you will be applying, but you are still encouraged to use the Common App application.

12 You must indicate whether or not you will be applying using the Common App. To do this:
Click on the “Pencil” icon to edit

13 Scroll down to the first school on your list that is a Common App school. On the drop down box click “Yes” if you will be applying using the Common Application. Click “No” if you will be using the school’s online application. “Unknown” is NOT an acceptable answer and will delay your BHHS school reports from being sent. Make sure that the list of colleges you enter in Naviance matches your list of colleges on Common App.

14 Letters of Recommendation
The deadlines to request letters of recommendation from your counselor and teacher(s) are as follows: October 1st – Early Decision/Early Action November 1st – Regular Decision

15 Requesting Letters of Recommendation
You MUST request letters of recommendation IN PERSON from your counselor and teachers. (Remember that UC and CSU schools do NOT accept letters of recommendation.) Complete your Brag Sheet and Resume (These are found on the “About Me” tab) before asking your counselor to write a letter of recommendation. Once your counselor and teacher(s) have agreed to write letters for you, you must send an electronic request through Naviance. It is your responsibility to ask your counselor and teacher(s) for letters of recommendation on or before the deadline. To send the electronic request, click on the “Colleges” tab and then “Colleges I’m Applying To” Scroll down to the bottom of the page to locate the Teacher Recommendation section, and click “add/ cancel requests”

16 Click on the drop down menu to select your counselor or teacher.
Type a note in the box (Optional, but it’s always nice to say “Thank you”) Click on “Update Requests” when you are finished. Remember – You MUST ask your counselor and teachers in person before sending the electronic request.

17 Requesting Transcripts
On the “Colleges I’m Applying to” page, click “Request Transcripts”

18 Check the boxes next to the schools to which you would like transcripts sent.
Click “Request Transcripts”

19 After You Have Submitted Your Applications (on the Common App, UC, CSU, or other college websites)…
On the “Colleges I’m Applying to” page, click “Have you applied?”

20 Check the box next to “I have submitted my application”

21 You will be able to track when records have been submitted by clicking on “Colleges I’m Applying To” under the “Colleges” tab. Naviance gives you one central location to track ALL of your college applications.

22 Regardless of where or how you are applying (Early or Regular),
all colleges that you are applying to MUST be entered into Naviance.

23 Remember, the college counselor and the college center is here to answer your questions and assist you through this process!
