2 What is Type 2 Diabetes? Diabetes Type 2 normally affects people over the age of 40 but can also affect anyone. Diabetes is caused by having too much sugar in your blood. References: Picture 1 – Picture 2 – Picture 3 – Picture 4 – Sometimes your body does not make enough insulin. Sometimes your body can not use insulin properly. Insulin helps your body to use blood sugar to keep you active and well.

3 Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes
Feeling very thirsty Weeing a lot, mainly at night time. References: Slide 3 Picture 1 – Picture 2 – Picture 3 – Picture 4 – Feeling very tired, often after eating. Weight loss. Itchiness around the vagina or penis.

4 Thrush is lots of white dots on your tongue
Blurred vision References: Slide 4 Picture 1 – Picture 2 – Picture 3 – Picture 4 – Skin infections If you notice any of these symptoms please visit your doctor as soon as possible

5 How Type 2 Diabetes is diagnosed?
Your doctor or practice nurse will find out if you have diabetes The doctor or nurse will need to take some blood References: Slide 5 Picture 1 – Picture 2 – Picture 3 – Picture 4 – You may have to wee into a tub for the doctor to see if there is any sugar present The blood and wee test will tell you if you have diabetes or not

6 Type 2 Diabetes can cause these problems if not treated
Long term sight loss Stroke (face drops down on one side) References: Slide 5 Picture 1 – Picture 2 – Picture 3 – Picture 4 – Picture 5 – Kidneys may not work properly leading to kidney disease A tight pain in your chest Foot problems such as open cuts that do not heal

8 Treatment options: You may need to take tablets to control your
Insulin injections help control the amount of sugar in your body References: Slide 7 Picture 1 – Picture 2 – Picture 3 – Picture 4 – Picture 5 – Eat regular healthy meals. Do not eat to many carbohydrates and fats Plenty of exercise to loose weight if you are overweight Stop smoking

9 You may have to monitor your blood sugars at home as well

10 Your feet will be checked
It is important that you go to the doctors for Annual Health Check once a year.
