2 Compass Rose Shows you the directions on the map
Cardinal Directions: N, S, E, W

3 Legend: Also called the “key” Explains the symbols and use of color on the map

4 Scale: Shows the ratio between a unit of length on a map and a unit of distance on the earth

5 Ratio Scale: the part written in numbers 1:30,000,000 or 1:62,500
Two Types of Scale: Ratio Scale: the part written in numbers 1:30,000,000 or 1:62,500 Bar Scale: a particular length on the map = a particular distance on the Earth

6 Small Scale vs. Large Scale
Small scale: shows a large area but without much detail Small scale = small amount of detail Large scale: shows a small area with much more detail Large scale = large amount of detail

7 Large Scale, because it shows more detail

9 Small Scale, because it has a small amount of detail

10 1: 800 Large scale (if the map is only showing small distances, like 800, then the picture must be of something up close, which makes it large scale) 1:450,000 Small scale (a number that large is going to show a lot of area or distance which means it is small scale)
