Compass Rose Shows you the directions on the map

Scale: Shows the ratio between a unit of length on a map and a unit of distance on the earth

Ratio Scale: the part written in numbers 1:30,000,000 or 1:62,500
Two Types of Scale: Ratio Scale: the part written in numbers 1:30,000,000 or 1:62,500 Bar Scale: a particular length on the map = a particular distance on the Earth

Small Scale vs. Large Scale
Small scale: shows a large area but without much detail Small scale = small amount of detail Large scale: shows a small area with much more detail Large scale = large amount of detail
