1 The Sun

2 3 ways to study (view) the Sun
Spectroscope Solar telescope Satellites

3 The sun is 110x larger in diameter than the earth.
400x further than the moon Surface temperature 5500 C, interior 15,000,000 C

4 Sun’s Atmosphere Photosphere- Yellow surface of the sun. Made of millions of cells called granules. Denser part of the atmosphere. Not nearly as dense as the earth’s atmosphere.

5 Chromosphere- Lower part of the outer atmosphere
Chromosphere- Lower part of the outer atmosphere. Glowing hydrogen can only be seen during a solar eclipse.

6 Corona- Layer above chromosphere. It has very little gas.
Solar prominences are flamelike arches of material that occur in the corona. The light from the prominences is actually the changes in temperature.

7 Sun Spots Dark spots in the photosphere. Cooler than surrounding area.
Appear to move with the sun’s rotation. (Sun is gas, rotates at different rates.)

8 Magnetic Storms Solar winds passing the earth along with a solar flare from the corona can produce an aurora.
