3 How many interstate highways are in GA?
Six interstate highways in Atlanta: I-20, I-75, I-85, I- 285, I-585, I-675 I-16 links Macon to Savannah I-95 Runs from along the eastern coastline

4 Why were interstates first built?
The U.S. government hoped that these highways would encourage economic growth and development, along with improving the nations defense.

I-95- eastern coast I-75 I-85 Odd numbered highways travel North to South Even numbered highways travel East to West There will be some exceptions to the rule

Busiest in the world. Competes with Chicago’s O’Hare Airport as the busiest.

10 The airport is named for…
William Harstfield who was a former Atlanta Mayor (51st) founded in September 21, 1980. Later Maynard Jackson’s name was added in 2003 to the name of the airport for his achievements. He was elected Mayor of Atlanta in 1973 and served 3 terms. He was the first African American Mayor of a major southern city.

11 How many planes??? Daily, about 1000 planes pass through Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Flights go to every continent except for Antarctica and

12 List reasons why HJIA is an important part of GA’s economy:
Carries travelers to Georgia who will spend money in the mountains, at the beach, or a city. Hartfield-Jackson also hosts the only Perishables Complex in the southeast - allowing for rapid movement of agricultural products. Largest employers in the State. Georgia companies can produce products at reduced cost, helping to facilitate trade and increase the overall competitiveness of companies doing business in Georgia.

There are 2 deep water ports in the state of Georgia: Savannah Brunswick These ports are managed by Georgia Ports Authority. Georgia Ports Authority mission statement is “to develop, maintain, and operate ocean and inland river ports within Georgia; foster international trade and new industry for state and local communities; promote Georgia’s agricultural, industrial, and natural resources; and maintain the natural quality of the environment.”

Port of Brunswick- Over 500 acres leased or owned by the Auto Industry Known for being number 1 in new auto imports Colonel’s Island Terminal: Shipment and storage of agricultural products: corn, soybeans, grains Mayor’s Point Terminal specializing as a distribution center for a variety of forest and solid wood products such as woodpulp, linerboard, plywood and paper products.
