Presentation on theme: "MRC PhD Partnership and Cohorts"— Presentation transcript:

1 MRC PhD Partnership and Cohorts
MRC are moving away from supporting individual students in individual HEIs and towards creating cohorts of students, supported by their supervisors and their institutional support teams across HEIs. LSHTM and SGUL have formed a partnership for MRC funded PhD training

2 The LSHTM – SGUL partnership Shared research priorities
Global infectious diseases Causal inference from large data sets Evaluating complex interventions Collaborative research Antimicrobial resistance Genomic medicine Understanding asthma Cardiovascular disease Built environment, lifestyle and health Complementary training Genomic Medicine Quantitative skills Interdisciplinary skills

3 Enhanced training for future research leaders
Academically excellent Highly motivated Outward looking

4 Who is eligible to join the cohort?
Individual training fellows Population health scientist fellows Strategic skills training fellows CASE students Doctoral training programme students MRC Unit students registered at LSHTM/SGUL - MRC Gambia, MRC Uganda, Clinical Trials Unit Х Staff funded on MRC research projects

8 What does the studentship provide?
Individual Studentship Awards Tuition Fees An annual stipend An annual RTSG (Research Training & Support Grant) An annual travel/conference allowance * Pooled Funding A flexible funding allowance (pooled across students awarded MRC LID Funding and all other MRC-funded students at both DTP institutions)

9 How to access your funding
RTSG and travel/conference allowance GBP 5, per student per year (pro rated for part year registration) GBP per student per year (pro rated for part year registration) These funds are passed to EPH – RDM (Jenny Fleming) ITD – Departmental Operating Officer PHP – RDM (Joanna Bending) SGUL – to be confirmed (for now check with Derilyn Frusher & Rachel Allen) You should make any requests for this funding by following their standard process. Flexible Funding Details of flexible funding and information on how to apply can be found on the MRC LID website:

10 MRC reporting requirements
Studentship details and outcomes of research must be reported back to the MRC. Students must comply with requests for further information and submissions. A Je-S record is created for every MRC Studentship student. Scholarships team in Registry will request a precis of your research studies every Aug/Sep. Provide details according to MRC requirements (use layman’s terms; focus on core skills areas etc) including placements, fieldwork, training researchfish enables the MRC to track research impacts Every year (usually Feb/Mar) they will contact you for information. You must provide this during the submission period or there may be implications on future funding for both institutions. Je-S and researchfish feed into Gateway to Research (GtR)

11 Contacts Funding Training
Administration for flexible funding (and for many MRC awards at LSHTM) is undertaken by the Scholarships team in LSHTM Registry. Training Administration for cohort training activities will be coordinated by Anne-Marie Sue-Patt, in the LSHTM TSO (Teaching Support Office) and Derilyn Frusher at SGUL.
