Supply chain Progress towards Aeronautical Community Excellence GIFAS Lean working group at Airbus Toulouse 13th July 2011 Jean Desproges-Gotteron SPACE Project Manager

Agenda Genesis Organization Services Push process Pull process
3
Genesis SPACE concept emerged at Airbus Supplier’s council
Non profit association created in July 2007 Objective : “to offer and implement, either directly or indirectly, services in order to improve the industrial performance and increase the competitiveness of supply chains of on-board products for the civil aeronautical industry » Key issue : be compliant with antitrust laws ! (penalty is up to 10% of company turnover !) Solution : Compliance code, Statutes, internal regulations, independent compliance officer, mission’s letter,... => Confidentiality of data
4
Focused small companies
Who ? Honorary Members Executive Members Dedicate skilled resources to implement common supplier development action plans Focused small companies
5
Who ? Small companies (<200 people) Associates members
Part of Executive Members’ Supply Chain Willing to improve their performances 30 improvement projects running Supported by the Tiers 1’s Experts network Results for the benefit of customers and suppliers

Usual strengths and weaknesses
Diagnostic general profile (use of IAQG tool) Usual strengths and weaknesses Lack of strong planning (tier-1 flow down) 5. Limitated preventive actions 3. Weak supply chain monitoring 4. Non efficient physical organization 2. No flow management 11

OTD improvement after 1 year
07/05/2018 Push process : results OTD improvement after 1 year Starting average 62% After 1 year average 84% +35%

Push process : results CUSTOMER RETURNS improvement after 1 year -41% Starting average 31700 ppm After 1 year average 18700ppm

as a complement of push process
Push Process, but… Expert resources are limited Budget is limited Large aeronautical Supply Chain (« Width ») More and more tier levels (« Height ») Increase need of improvements Pull process as a complement of push process
15
Pull Process To deploy manufacturing improvement widely and
deeper in the supply base Process = same as push process (diagnostic, action plan,…) Resources = Consultants (instead of Executive members experts)
16
Pull process : Cluster concept
Committed customer identified as cluster leader => selects suppliers for improvement Cluster leader (Customer) Sx S1 S2 S3 1 to x Suppliers Individual industrial improvement project launched at each Supplier Level (20 days of consultant each) All based on Lean concepts developed at Suppliers level up to the Link with their Customer
17
Pull process : SPACE role
SPACE brings : Methodology Resources : consultant agreement Reporting (dedicated software from SYSTEAM), steering Steering committee at supplier level every 3 months with Space representative (ECTI) Steering committee at cluster level with the SPACE Aerolean’k program leader in order to address the interlink issues 4th SPACE service : referral service In March 2011, SPACE signed a convention for 2 years with the French DGCIS (Direction Générale de la Compétitivité de l’Industrie et des Services) from the Ministry of Economy with the objective to bring its supports and its experts for manufacturing improvement projects at SME aeronautical suppliers nationwide. Aimed at prime contractors resources mutualization and Lean manufacturing methods, the actions will be coordinated by regional delegates
18
Pull process : SPACE referral application
CONSULTANT - File Application : Personal resume Proof of at least one successful project in an aerospace supplier (SME) Skills matrix auto-evaluation Costing conditions Experience : at least one project in aerospace industry in the past 5 years Signs the Ethics Chart Ethics Chart Non disclosure agreement Transparency about past activities Commits on conducting projects himself
19
Pull process : Aerolean’k : Operates in Aquitaine and Midi-Pyrénées Is chaired by Is subsidized by Is operated by Is budgeted at 1,1 M€ (over 2 years) Started in February 2011
20
Pull process : 9 Clusters Each with several suppliers (48 in total)
With collective training sessions Exchange symposiums Benchmark approach and results Cluster leader Sx S1 S2 S3 Cluster leader Sx S1 S2 S3 Cluster leader Sx S1 S2 S3 Cluster leader Sx S1 S2 S3

Conclusion SPACE is recognized as the key link between the aeronautical prime contractors and the European supply base to develop their performances and implement the Lean manufacturing methodology. SPACE is a recent association but now well known and supported by : Aeronautical prime contractors, Local authorities (regions) The French Ministry of Industry via the DIRECCTE The French Ministry of Economy via the DGCIS European aeronautical manufacturing associations
