Introduction The 19th century was a time of unprecedented industrial growth throughout Europe. As industries, old and new alike, started to expand European economies also began to transition away from mercantilism and embrace capitalism. This resulted in an improvement in the overall living conditions for the poorest members of society as they became accustomed to having a steady income. However, even as the standard of living and the quality of life improved the Industrial Revolution also lead to a widening gap between the wealthy and the poor. As a result of this many Europeans found themselves living in tenements, sending children to work and working an average of 14 hours a day in dangerous conditions. Over the course of the 19th century various arguments about how to improve the lives of European workers emerged, three of which included classical economists urging governments to practice Laissez-Faire Capitalism, the rise of liberal and socialist groups encouraging workers to unite and the desire of other groups to enfranchise the working class. 4-6 Sentences max
