Compounds and Mixtures
2
Substances Pure Substance- Matter that has the same composition and properties throughout. (made of same atoms or molecules) Compound- Substance whose smallest unit is made up of atoms of more than one element bonded together. Often have properties that are different from the elements that make them up.
3
Mixtures Mixture- When two or more substances (elements or compounds) come together but don’t combine to make a new substance. Proportions of the substances in a mixture can be changed without changing the identity of the mixture.
4
Mixtures Homogeneous- Same throughout. Cannot see the different parts.
Ex: Brass, sweet tea, kool-aid Heterogeneous- Has larger parts that are different from each other. Ex: Pepperoni and mushroom Pizza, toy box filled with toys
5
Solutions Well-mixed mixture that contains a solvent and a solute.
Solvent- the part of the solution that represents the majority. It dissolves the solute. Solute- smaller amount, dissolved by solvent.
6
Solutions Colloid- a mixture with tiny particles undissolved. Ex- milk
Suspension- mixture with larger particles undissolved Ex- snow globe or pulpy orange juice
